This is an intensely homophobic film

I thought this type of negative portrayal of gay love had died out years ago. But here we have an old fashioned film portraying gay love as doomed and negative.

I guess this is how it would be in 1989...

Homophobic? Just because it portrays a gay love story as troublesome doesn't mean it's homophobic. Is every movie portraying straight love as troublesome heterophobic?

There is of course a huge difference in how gay-themed romances and straight romances are portrayed in cinema: the majority of hetero love films end happily (or at least with the lovers becoming an item), whilst same-sex love films usually end miserably with one of the lovers either killing him/herself, choosing a to live in a straight relationship, or the two simply going their seperate ways. 'Straight' themed films are hopeful, 'gay' themed are bleak and morbid.

Now, I think that the original poster was commenting on this totally unfair representation of same-sex love in films which is often very negative and may effectively be seen by some as being anti-gay and working as a cautionary tale about falling in love with the same sex. I have noticed though that lesbian-themed movies are generally much more hopeful, unlike gay male romances, which is probably indicative that we live in a society that is more accepting of female sexual diversity than a male's...I'm not saying that women are totally sexually liberated or respected but that there is certainly an unspoken-of oppression and stigmatisation attributed to male sexuality, but that's a whole other issue i think.
I hope this sheds some light on the issue.

If you consider that, Jarle only grew up after he fell in love with a boy, you'll see how this movie doesn't have any negative views on homosexuality. Only after he became "gay", he was able to think clearly about things and be fair with people around.

"Intensely homophobic"? I mean there were a few taunts and then at the party when Jarle goes off (mainly to cover up to his friends), but there wasn't anything out of the ordinary for high school/college types for 1989. There are far more many gay-themed movies where the screenwriter writes an unhappy ending.

This is a story about growing up, about figuring out your life and how scary love can be. Have you read the book at all? I can only assume something got lost in translation for you.

i don´t think so.
it´s not homophobic, it´s ABOUT homophobia - that´s a great difference.

i found it very touching.

Negative? Jarle only grew up after he fell in love with a boy. This movie is not primarily about a couple or gay love, but about Jarle, it's a character study, he is "the man who loved yngve".
