Anyone read Steven's book 'My Appetite for Destruction'?

Ha! HE has a lot of nerve saying that Amy is holding back. Has he ever told Dr. Drew about his gang rape(s) and sexual molestation he endured when he was 14 and whacked out of his mind on drugs? I must have missed that.

reply

Wow-no one read it....U should if u like GnR or Steven.

reply

Steven Adler wrote a book? When he was clean for that one day??

reply

I kinda wondered the same thing. How can someone THAT messed up write a book. But I read a lot of 'rock star autobios' and most of them have a co-author (or whatever the title is) on the covers. And MAfD is by Steven Adler with Lawrence J. Spagnola. Just sayin'...He had some help (prob. a lot of help).

I think I can, at least, respect that a bit more than a 'ghost writer'-type book. A 'ghost writer' doesn't even get regognition of the book, right? Maybe it's one of the names in the adknowlegments in the back of the book? But I think it just has the celeb listed as the author when there's a 'ghost writer'. Sometimes, you just never know who really wrote thsoe books.

reply

I loved Guns N Roses back in the day (still love their Appetite for Destruction CD) ... but I had no clue he wrote a book. Thanks for the recommendation. Will definitely check that out.

I borrowed it from the library. I am reading Steve-O's book now. Check that one out, too.

reply

Thanks - I will. I noticed our library had Nikki Sixx's book (actually, I think it was a diary he kept while he was using).

reply

I am not sure if most libraries do this but with mine I just go to the website, register, place holds on books or dvds. They e mail me when they are ready for me to pick upa nd I can also renew them online.

reply

Yes, I love that with our library. Also, our's can "borrow" from other libraries within our state if they don't have a certain book. Just fill out a form and pay 2 dollars for postage and you can get just about any book.

reply

I live in S FL (Delray Beach) and ours can do inter library borrowing and there is no fee. It is better than buying a book and reading it 1x-especially the ones I like to read-stupid auto-biogs!

reply

Yeah, that's what it's called - inter-library, but we have to pay a $2 postage fee, which is fine with me, since I love to read, but hate spending a lot of money on books lol. (I love the auto-bios and unauthorized bios, too, esp. about the celebrities - don't know why, though lol.)

Have u read Jodi Sweetin's book? I just finished Denise Richard and she gives no detail about Charlie's antics-she mentions them and glosses right over. I have also read Kendra's and I can't remember the others ;/

reply

Oh, I completely forgot about Jodi Sweetin's book! I always loved her on Full House - so cute lol. I didn't realize Denise Richards wrote one ... I wonder if it was part of their divorce that they couldn't write books about their marriage? (I would LOVE to read a book on their marriage, though lol.)

Denise's just came out and is called The Girl Next Door. Jodi's is good-A Sweetined Life.

I am a ferocious reader. I have read many bio's and S.Adler's was great. N.Sixx's 'the heroin diaries' was good but Motley Crue's 'the dirt' was better.

I stopped going to the library when I was kid. I never wanted to return the good books so I would shop at second hand book stores and buy them. Then of course there is Barnes and Nobles& Boarders when I fell like being good to myself. With discounts and email coupons I get really good deals. I was just at Boarders on Saturday, they are out of business/closing in 10days, everything is 75% off so I bought a ton of books. I bid my farewells to the staff who actually knew me as a 'regular' - How dorky is that, right? lol.

*tigers love pepper, they hate cinnamon*

reply

I didn't realize Motley Crue had a book. I'll have to look that one up, also. I remember being a kid ... it was my favorite thing to do - go to the library. Gosh, all the books I could choose from lol.

I love looking in thrift stores for books. It's the first place I go in a thrift store - the books lol. I live in a small town, so we don't have a big bookstore. It's probably good, though, cause I'd spend way too much money on books lol. I love that you knew the staff at Boarders ... definitely not dorky! (I bet you got some good clearance books, though! Lucky duck.)

I love the BUY/SELL/TRADE stores. The bad part is, you don't really get back that much money for your books. But anyone who's ever sold their textbooks after a semester, knows that feeling. You do better (at least at the store I shop) w/using a store credit to buy books there (they're not gonna be that new, of course). But you wind up with more of a benefit than just selling them. AND, it's a good way to get rid of the piles of books that just keep taking up space.

reply

'The Dirt' has been around for a while, and there's even a board on IMDb, bc there's been talks (forever!) about making it into a movie.

I do love book stores and libraries. I got my nook as a gift, otherwise, I may not have bought it (at least for a while). I really love to go in and browse, I could spend lots of time (and lots of money) there. Seriously, it's the only shopping I enjoy. I absolutely abhor any other type of shopping.

Not dorky at all about being a regular at Borders. I'm sad to learn of their closing. But with e-books, I'm not surprised. Amazon has the Kindle and B&N has the nook. Before all that, though, Borders was my fave. ONE of the things that actually kept me from going out and buying a nook or Kindle for myself, when I first considered it, is the nostalgia that comes with the scent of pages. Okay? Who's dorky now? I really thought, 'idk if i wana buy one, bc i'll miss the smell of a real book' And I'll bet next time I actually open a hard copy (esp. an old one), I WILL get nostalgic.
lol

lol .. how funny! My sis-in-law and I were discussing that very subject a few weeks ago. Both she and I love to read. We were trying to figure out if we could get used to having a nook or kindle because we both loved the feeling of holding a book, turning the page, and even loved the smell of a book.

And I might sound geeky, but I LOVE looking around in our library, thrift stores, used book stores, ect. for books. I could stay for hours searching through the books ... even writing down the ones I thought looked interesting and might read one day lol.

I have to agree that I thought 'The Dirt' was better, but I still loooove anything Nikki, and knowing that those were his diaries written in such horrible times, made it all-the-more revealing.

After loving 'THD' so much, I was so excited when his recent book, 'This is Gonna Hurt' came out...and like 'THD', a CD was realeased w/same title (kinda a soundtrack to a book, instead of a movie). I had a hard copy already pre-ordered (as soon as I heard about it) and then just past midnight on the day of the release, I ordered the e-book for my nook (bc YES, I'm that crazy about him). BUT, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed. It had a bit of a autobio/memoir feel to it, but the book was very much about showing off his photography. I've known for a while that he's into photography, and that's cool, but I guess I was expecting another revealing or tell-all. Maybe also, it's just that, perhaps I know-all. hee hee! (although he did talk about he and kat von d (ick!), their relationship, not being w/her, etc.)

Anyway, EVERYBODY, please share titles. I love to get recommendations about books. Share 'em here on this thread, or PM me. I've read a lot of this genre, so I'd love to share some as well.

reply

Anyway, EVERYBODY, please share titles. I love to get recommendations about books.

This is not exactly a celeb bio, but it's a memior of a lady who grew up with a mother who had munchausen by proxy. Really good book, but infuriating to read ... Sickened: The Memoir of a Munchausen by Proxy Childhood by Julie Gregory.

MacKenzie Phillips High on Arrival was really good, also.Girl, Interrupted is one of my favorites. Also, Prozac Nation ...

reply

Thx, Tracey. Very cool that we've found something [else] we have in common. Yay! I actually get so excited when I hear a recommendation (or more) that I think I'm gonna enjoy. I used to read only true crime, and now into memoirs, but most def. nonfiction is my cup of tea.

I just ran and got my nook, and downloaded free samples (another pro of a nook...read several pages before you buy!) of 'Sickened...' and 'Girl...' Although, on 'Girl...', the only title that came up on my nook is by Susanna Kaysen and SparkNotes...it's listed as a Literature Guide. Is that the one you were talking about? Unfortunately, not every title is available on e-books (con).

I've read 'High on Arrival', and I recommend that to others as well.

I think I may've read 'Prozac Nation', but I still wanted to look at the Overview on my nook to make sure. Well, couldn't find that title either.

reply

Oh, I love true crime, also! That's usually the first place I head to in a book store lol. There's a book I read by the father of the little boys that Susan Smith (she strapped her kids in the car and drowned them in the lake in South Carolina) killed. I don't remember the name of it, but it's absolutely heartbreaking to read! Another one is Devil's Knot (about the West Memphis 3).

Girl, Interrupted is by Susanna Kaysen, but I'm not sure of the Literature Guide? It's much better than the movie IMO. I read another memior written by a lady who grew up with a nutty mom. It was one of those where your jaw just drops at some of the things her mother does and says. I cannot think of the name of it ... but I'll try to search around our library because that's where I got it from.

Marilyn Manson's auto-bio was great! ... totally creepy.

I was touched by Tatum O'Neal's first auto-bio. We are around the same age, born in the 60's, children and young teens of the 70's. Haven't read her second one out now and don't plan on it because she basically apologizes to everyone for the first book and that's just not right! lol

Sammy Davis Jr's bio 'Deconstructing Sammy' was fantastic .... It gives real insight to how he died almost penniless and terrible ppl who 'rooked' him.

'The Michael Jackson Tapes' written by close personal friend and confidant (lol), Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, was riveting.

'Just Kids', Patti Smith (horses, springsteen's remake 'because the night belongs to lovers'), was good but boring.

Keith Richards' 'Life' was long as hell - some 550pgs .... but worth the week I put into it.

'The Ballad of Joe Stummer' of the clash was really good. But it was written by a brit about a brit and deciphering all the 'moss on the mosey's' was killing me. I had to look up much of the lingo.

Jenna Jamison's 'How to Make Love Like a Porn Star' was fabulous! ... I recommend it to everyone. I put a pink paper cover on mine so I could read it in public (my son's karate/sports practices) ... lmao!

'Choosing Death', a Death Metal bio was very interesting.

'Confessions of a Video Vixen' - great. Hip Hop/ Rap video girl. Short but good. I read it in a day.

Neil Strauss' (rock&roll writter for spin/rolling stone to name a few and auto-bio writter for M.Manson/J.Jamison/'the dirt' M.Crue) 'EVERYONE LOVES YOU WHEN YOU'RE DEAD' was hysterical. It's a collaboration of interviews he did for magazine profiles with the likes of Madonna, Led Zepplin, and Ike Turner. ... And Brittany Spears, Christina Agulara, & Lady GaGa .... (in case u dont recognize the others- lol)

pfft ... I have read so many. Slash-great. S.Adler-great. V.Neil-sad-great. N.Sixx-great. Jim Morrison's 'Dark Star'-great ... & Many more.

My Fav Auto-Bio is not even about a famous person. I was in Manhattan with my son (he was 8yrs old at the time) and we were just off Times Square on 42nd street outside the McDonalds. I had a 'brain freeze' from the iced mocha latte' I was drinking so we had to stop walking and take a break - LOLOL. While crouched down rubbing my head a beat up white van pulls up, the sliding door opens, and a bunch of what looked like gang members jump out. The first 2 guys that jump out step back a few paces from the van on the sidewalk and another guy jumps out with a folding table flat against his body. The 2 guys already there on the curb pull the legs out and the table holder guy plops the table down on the sidewalk as the others get a few boxes out. They unload a box of books and are trying to sell it to passer bys on the street for $5. I walk up and ask what it's about and one of the guys directs to the man standing behind the table (running the show-no doubt). He introduced himself to me, Terrence LeRoy Baker, and told me of the book they were selling. It was his own auto-bio called 'Son of the Streets'. The book is about his life on the streets of South Bend Indiana and his life of crime, gangs, & drugs. Never graduating High School and actually writing this book on his own with no backers, he was selling it on the streets all over the country. I just happened to be where he landed. We chatted for a few minutes and I told him I was an avid reader and loved bios. He told me he thought I was brave (meaning crazy) to walk up to a bunch of 'former' gang members with an 8yr old and ask questions ... lol. He showed me and my son his gun shot wounds, disclosed the horrors of jail, and told my son that crime was 'no good'. Seeing that my son and I were on a budget, he gave me the book and signed it to me and my son. After a minute or 2 a cop rounded the corner where the illegal book sale was set up and in an instant as fast as it set up - they close shop, boxes in the van, table guy lifts the table and 2 guys fold the legs in, they all jump in ... close the door and off they went to another street/city .... idunno .... but the book was fantastic.

I have read all sorts of sh*t. All NON FICTION ... from Aristotle to van Gogh to Nixon. I have read of stories of heroism, hedonism, and faith - u name it. I hate fiction. Nothing perks me up more than a juicy tale of lust and crime by Dominic Dunne (R.I.P.) or the melodramatic life story of Gia/Supermodel (who incidentally was buried in a graveyard I walked past everyday on my way to work).

I could go on .... lol

Oh ... I cant leave this one out. I read a book about Princess Diana and the details of the car accident that killed her. I cried through the entire book.

*tigers love pepper, they hate cinnamon*

*Just popped in my head*

Princess Diana's bio account 'Death of a Princess' .... so so very sad.

Side note: My son reads reads bios as well. He (we) just finished 'A lion called Christian' - LOOK IT UP on YouTube - a complete heart tugger. There are so many bios for kids out there but at this point he's totally into fiction - I don't get it - lol - some of it is really out there. I try to reel him back in with a game of 'Pick a President' out of his set of kids short bio books on all the Presidents of the United States to read together. We did Lincoln and Washington on our trip to DC this summer. Don't laugh - I have another set for him, 50, one for every state! We bring those along when we travel and read about the states as we pass them by or stay. He reads National Geographic for Kids (I get the adult one! lol) ...... And our shared guilty pleasure .... MAD Magazine (based on part realism but for the most part fiction - lmao - Alfred E. Newman would love me for that one!!!!).

I totally forgot about Marilyn Manson having an auto-bio. I'll have to check that one out. He's somewhat creepy to me, but fascinating at the same time lol.

Wow @ the former gang writer's story. Some of those memiors are excellent reads. I totally forgot about the book written about Gia - that was one of my favorite bios of all time.

I would also recommend the following:

1. Fall to Pieces - Mary Forsberg Weiland (Scott Weiland's ex-wife & mother of his two children. It is an AMAZING book that is worth owning. I loved every word & I learned a lot).

2. Not Dead & Not for Sale - Scott Weiland (his "memoir" is solid but no where near as relevant, detailed & honest as Mary's book. And I am a HUGE Scott Weiland/STP fan!)

3. It's So Easy - Duff McKagan (I'm not a big GNR fan, but I love these rock-n-roll biographies. Duff's is a pretty damn good one.)

I have another book I'd like to recommend. It's not a autobiography, but if you like to read books about drug addicts and how far they'll go in their habit, I HIGHLY recommend the novel, "Candy" by Luke Davies. The film is also VERY good. The film is a good adaptation of the novel. It takes place in Australia and stars Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish & Geoffrey Rush. "Candy" was the last film in which Heath Ledger used his native Aussie accent. I watched the film at least a dozen times before finding the novel. Like my first recommendation (Fall to Pieces), Candy is one worth owning. I've read it several times already. Its about as "gritty" as one could imagine. Its also humorous, heartfelt, devastating & so interesting. A very honest insight into heroin addiction.

I also agree that Mackenzie Phillips' book is good, as well as Tatum O'Neal's first book (haven't read her second). I definitely enjoyed Nikki Sixx's first book too & the Jenna Jameson one is solid, as well.

Apparently, Ron Jeremy has a autobiography out too. haha! But I'd be lying if I denied an interest in reading it. Oh, and Anthony Kiedis has one called "Scar Tissue" - it's another great read.

And to the OP, I own Steven Adler's book and I quite like it. It's not the best out of my list, but it's certainly entertaining and worth the time to read.

Hope my suggestions are helpful. :)

reply

Yeah-I liked Tatum's first book better than her 2nd.

reply

Not sure if it was already mentioned, but Duff McKagan's book "It's so easy...and other lies" is really good. I don't know why, but I enjoy reading autobiographies about people who had serious addictions and got better. It's just fascinating to me to find out when they finally recognized their problem and got help. And the different ways to get clean are fascinating too! I didn't even know Duff wrote a book; I happened to see him on Dr. Phil talking about his addiction and his book.

reply

Also, Tom Sizemore wrote a book that was excellent. Can't remember the title though! I always enjoyed his acting (Heat, Saving Private Ryan) and I watched his season of Celebrity Rehab. So when I found out he wrote a book I knew I had to read it.

reply

Tracey, I've wondered the same thing about Denise Richard's and have assumed that it is part of their agreement, which is prob. best. But on one hand, I want to give her a lot of credit for keeping 'mum', bc OF COURSE she's going to be asked about him, esp. since she was there when he lost his $*!+ at the hotel...and then esp. w/her book debut (although the timing is still not lost on me, regardles of hernot mentioning Charlie's antics). But, time after time, I saw her asked about Charlie, and she kept her cool. I mean, even if there's a gag order, w/most ppl, you can read 'em like a book, whether they say something verbally or not. Regardless, it is best not to air his/her/their dirty laundry, if for only the benefit of the children. And you just know, even for the best, most forgiving of people, it's gotta be hard to deal with an ex, yet still your children's father...with THAT many issues, ya' know?

and scooter, I read Kendra's book too. 'Sliding into Home'? It's a decent, quick read.

reply

Yeah, I have to give Denise Richards a lot of credit on keeping her mouth shut regarding their dirty laundry. I watched her reality show (and was mad when it was cancelled lol), but I don't remember her saying bad things about him (I could be wrong, though). He would definitely be one of those ex's you just don't want to have kids with lol (esp with his drug abuse issues).

I used to live in Boca. Still have my Palm Bch and Broward counties library cards. Where I live now, there's a fee for library cards (and it ain't cheap!).

I don't know how common that is. But everywhere I've ever lived, public libraries offered free library cards, and I always had one. I was VEEERY disappointed to learn that when I moved here.

For that reason, and many others, I'm completely addicted to my nook. Love it! If I want a book, it's mine in seconds. But there are pros and cons ($$$, of course). I'm certain I spend more on e-books than I would w/that fee. But I just enjoy the convenience and that I can always grab it and go, and it has tons of books right there at my disposal.

I do still love the library (and book stores too...w/nook,I have access to all B&N books, while I'm there. And I take advantage of the summer reading program at the public library...they offer free cards for the summer.

So, scooter, how long ago did you read 'MAfD'? There was one part of the book that I just did not get. Maybe I was falling asleep. If you think you could help me out, just let me know, and we can PM each other, so we don't give any of it away.

I'm almost finished w/it now. But it was a part that happened way earlier in the book. I'd have to go and find it, if you think you can help me out...please...=)

reply

No problem-that would be fine:) I read the book last month.

reply

Please read 'The Heroin Diaries'! Nikki Sixx is my all-time fave! LOOOVE him! hee hee!

Yes, he's always kept journals/diaries, and he came across them in a storage unit or something, and pulled out the the ones from that year ('87) in which he 'died' from a heroin overdose.

I've actually knew all this, but it was still so great to read his words. Actually, since I read a lot of 'rock star autobios', I have come across different books with the scene where Nikki has been given too much heroin. Steven Adler is there, Slash is there, and Slash's girlfriend. So interesting to read how differently they look at the situation (and even how much responsibility is taken for Nikki being alive).

Also...GREAT BOOK!!! 'The Dirt' It was written by all the members of Motley Crue and some others like managers, family members, etc. Again, it was great! I mean we prob. all remember the sex, drugs, and rock and roll that went along with that lifestyle, but to read it, you get just how much absolute debauchery that lifestyle included!

reply

pptrts - thanks for the recommendation! I was a hard-core Motley fan back in the 80's (still love listening to them), so I know I would love reading both of those books. I've seen The Heroin Diaries at our library, but I keep forgetting to swing by and pick it up. I'll have to look for The Dirt, though.

OMG! Right? Don't you just love to hear 80's tunes (esp. MC, for me). One night, I'm riding in my car alone, moon roof open, gorgeous night...and I'm singing at the top of my lungs, 'Home Sweet Home'. I stopped at a stoplight, and so then, I could play drums of my steering wheel, of course, right? Oh, I'm totally into it. Then I got that feeling, you know, when you feel that someone is looking at you. I really don't care about that, bc I sing in my car all the time, and love to see others jamming in their cars. But, strangers. Well, at the stoplight next to me, were my really good friends husband and some of their kids. They were all waving and laughing. Sooo funny! Yes, I was a little embarrased, but 'Oh well'. Her husband is a musician, so I know he, at least, had an appreciation for my car rendition. LOL!

reply

lol @ being caught singing in your car. I do the same thing when I have to drive a long ways. I'm sure I look pretty goofy driving down the road, singing at the top of my lungs lol. Oh, well - it's so much fun to do that.

I still love the big haired 80's metal - probably the majority of my music on my mp3 is 80's metal. (And, yes, definitely MC) ... I used to try and do my hair like Nikki Sixx's lol. I had it cut like his (back in the 80's) and would blow dry it upside down. It never did work out though lol.

Oh, TY Tracey, so very much for that visual. That will totally be my mental image of you forever when we communicate in the future. Love it!

Heck yeah on singing in the car! The older I've gotten, I found that the less I care if others see me (still...prob. more comfortable w/strangers though...lol). I'm thinking that's cool bc a lot of times the older ppl get, the more reserved they become. I don't wanna become boring. My child may be of a different opinion, seeing as how I've been known to 'pass the microphone' (which is my thumb...of course, duh!) to her when she's in the passenger seat so she can be my back-up singer. It's all Kool and the Gang, unless we're in the carpool line!

reply

lol ... yes, the hairstyle was quite 80's looking! (And I cannot believe the make-up I wore - cringe). I know what you mean about the older we get, the less we care what others think. I am still self-conscious, but definitely not as bad as I used to be. lol @ your daughter being the back up singer! That's so great that you both can have fun and share mom/daughter moment ... you'll treasure that forever!

That makes me think when I was growing up, my best friend (at the time) and I would pretend we were on Solid Gold (are you old enough to remember that show?) and use deodrant (the round Ban to be specific) as our microphone lol. We would crank up Total Eclipse of the Heart and sing like there was no tomorrow lol.

I'm thinking that Dr. Drew has been told by Steven, maybe they just chose not to show that. But, maybe not. ??? I do recall Steven telling Dr. Drew about how his mother left all his stuff out on the sidewalk when he was 11, kicking him out, and essentially that she chose her new husband over her son. Of course, reading the book, that part sounds a little different. To hear how much of a wild child he was even at that age, I see why his mom did that. That's not to say I necessarity agree w/it. IDK. He had a tough life from birth, so...again, IDK.
