Shifty in and out of coma

Give it a couple of weeks or months and Celebrity Rehab can add another person to its death list. Not that he died of being on this show of course, but it becomes harder and harder to justify the making of such a show. It's like watching future dead people for the most part.

I agree about the part of watching future dead people. I remember hearing about Mike Starr's passing and going, 'I thought he was already dead'. It sucked he died of course, but the drugs did not paint him a pretty picture of survival.

Shifty might make out of this and go back to his life, but I don't think he will ever comprehend this. That's just unfortunate.

That dude, man.

That's the nature of addiction. I work in the addiction field and it's a fact that people die. Even while they are still in treatment. Especially with the current popularity of opiates among young people. We have 20 year old clients who have O.D.d 12 times and have been brought back to life and yet still go back for "one more high" ... it's only a matter of time before that "one more" becomes their last high.
I have mixed feelings about this show itself, but I think it's important for people to realize how serious and deadly addiction can be. Maybe this show is exploitative, over-edited, and a set-up, but at least it's another way for people to learn about this horrible condition that affects so many people.

Yeah people should be more educated about how destructive these addictions can be, and that there will be people that simply don't make it. I just think this show is crossing some ethical lines, and believe me I'm someone who thinks you can get away with a lot while making a show because in the end, in reality TV the participants are there voluntarily. The biggest danger is that they misrepresent you in some way, but they usually can't do that either if you don't at least give them some ammunition to work with.

But what we're doing here, is paying people to go into rehab. They may not take drugs during their short stay in this rehab center, but they know they'll leave there with cash, something most of them were probably desperate for. So you can wonder how serious a lot of them were about getting clean in the first place. I think it's good and essential to educate people about addiction, but certainly from a producer point of view that isn't the only intention, which makes the whole thing very perverse IMO. Like I said, paying to watch future dead people basically.

It's interesting reading these posts 4 years later and seeing where we're at now.

Recreational pot legalized in multiple states with more on the way and the problems that's creating both personally and society wise. We have a President who isn't enforcing Federal marijuana laws anymore, and the latest I read was Obama isn't going to enforce Heroin sales laws anymore either. No wonder Dr. Drew doesn't want to do the show anymore...he's too busy treating the fallout from the above.
