Abner and Ellen...Hal and Dixie

Let me go on record first by saying that I really think this is a great movie. Now, can I say how unbelievably sad it is now that the real life story of Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter so closely parallels the movie? It was pretty profound and affecting in the first place, but now with Dixie's death and the scenes of them together being, in essence, the last time they would work together, it's so much more poignant. Good grief, tearing my heart out already!!

Soooo completely agree. Art imitates life - in sadness.

Probably the most unsettling scene in the film was seeing the flashback scene of Carter's character lying lifeless on the kitchen floor. It gave me the willies because, obviously, Carter had passed away herself well before the DVD was released.

I agree. When I saw the movie the first time, it was before Dixie had passed. Even then, it was pretty startling. When I watched the DVD, of course, it was just awful to see that scene again. I can't imagine what it's like for Hal and her family to see the film now...may not even be possible for them to watch it now with the scene of her lying on the floor and everything.

I agree-it's very eerie to watch considering that Dixie is no longer with us. It's also weird watching their tender scenes together considering how their relationship was in real life.
