What was the name of Abner's town, and is it a real place?

I can't rememeber the name of Abner's town. Is it a real place in Tennessee or somewhere in Knox or Blount counties?

I am from Maryville, TN. I don't know where the story itself takes place, but much of the film was made here in Maryville.

Yeah, I asked one of the actors, and he said the house was somewhere in Rockford. Still, I can't rememeber the name of the fictional town in the movie. Does anyone know?

I can tell you that I know for a fact that the shots where it looks like they are downtown, are of Rockwood, TN. My parents live in that area. I never thought I'd see Rockwood on the movie screen, but sure enough, there they were.

The name of the town is "Ackerman's Field" and no it is NOT a real town here in TN. Gay uses it because as a child he played in a field often and asked his father whose it was and his father replied "That's Ackerman's Field." He uses it often in his books.

This was what my English Professor @ MTSU told the class. He knows Mr. Gay personally so I think it is an extremely reliable source.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just said my parents live where they shot a great deal of the movie, and this guy says he's college professor is a better source.
