In regards to their so called friend who spiked their coffee with LSD. Both couples should have returned after they recovered and beat the crap out the guy or sued his butt off. He could have killed them, or caused them to accidentally kill someone. Was it ever explained why he did that? It seems like a hippie 60's thing to do. Did he have a grudge against them due to their fame? Strange times!

well, it was 60's, and he was possibly a hippie, or had hippie tendencies. dosing people was way more common back then, a naive thing or not.
If I am not mistaken , I think he was a medical student, whose dad was a cop. I believe the family was wealthy.

Sounds like the OP hasn't a clue how amazing the effects of LSD are , one only has to see the spectacular new directions their music took off in after 1965 from Rubber Soul to Magical Mystery Tour . Steve Jobs who created Pixar and of course AAPL corp the largest company in the world said taking LSD was the most important life changing event he had ever experienced .
Dosing someone without their knowledge was done in the early prankster days but commonly not done for it would be just plain rude & terribly inconsiderate to anyone to do so . Though there's been the thought the world would be a better place if the entire human race took LSD together rather than the universal daily addiction to methamphetamines, coccaine & caffein, coffee being the largest import in the USA next to oil . Also drunk heavily in the Middle East , just what we want nations of speed freaks all amped up in an all to hurried world that gets shallower everyday , addicted to pumped up caffein energy drinks .

Seems the world has moved on to a space where CG & 3D , religious fundamentalism , revenge of the Nerds on Red Bull & other idiocies have replaced that wanting to be actually living in the present , sampling life as it is which is one thing that LSD only amplifies to peak experience levels .
If you think that Marty Scorcese has never taken LSD , think again , you'll find many & mostof the more creative people have all done LSD once or twice & carrued away fro that the most mazing experience life can offer . John always had a bit of weakness for alcohol which is one of the real mind killers , you should be 1000 times more worried about someone driving on alcohol than driving on LSD .

That's the part that was sick and dirty, their so called friends had tricked them. It's one thing to willingly take LSD, but he and his gf or wife had doped their coffee. I read that the two couples feared a sex orgy or something of that nature, for whatever reason they wanted to get far away from those wackos. In some sense, it would have made sense to stay at the house until the effects wore off. I can understand to some extent the pot smoking and pill popping to stay awake during their hectic lives and to stay sane. Plus pot has always been part of the music world. Even the jazz greats smoked pot but my mom stated they never abused it. LSD aand the other drugs are another matter.
