Skin + Bones = piece of crap

Mercilessly stupid...and it got worse as it went along.

If I was 10 y/o I might have been scared.

It was like a horror comic book.

Also became repulsive.

And how long to load a rifle? You could have made a rifle in that time.

The end - absolutely junk. Mom saves the day.

reply

...then Mom eats everyone...

I liked it.

This was a great ep. Fun and creepy - next time watch it alone in the dark as everyone is asleep in your house.

I watched this whole thing and it was pretty good in part. A little too disgusting for network TV though. But then then he gets shot twice and doesn't skip a beat, including once at almost point blank range. But Mom shoots him and he's dead. What? You've got to be kidding me? What? Did they run out of film or did they have to leave something on the cutting floor to fit in a couple of commercials? Sequel maybe? All I know is couldn't be more let down and peeved by a nightmare blind date...

reply

Well, if you notice the kid didn't know much about guns, and he puts trap loads in the shotgun, which is basically bird shot. It can be very difficult to kill someone with those loads unless you are point blank. At a distance, most of the pellets will just stick in the skin. It's not shown, but I'm assuming the other shotgun probably had buckshot in it. Plus she shot him from a couple of feet in the head, so it probably doesn't matter what kind of shot it was.

What I found totally unbelievable was how dumb they all were with guns. I mean, come on, anybody living in an isolated place like that would have at least one and know how to use it well, just to keep off bear and other predators. These weren't hippies on a commune, for God's sake.

And the mother not pulling the trigger the first time...stupid. The last twenty minutes were totally unnecessary.

pretty sure the mum shot him in the head.
this episode was awesome, the wendigo looked scary as hell and the whole end bit with the dead guy and eating him was just sick, so wrong.

reply

um the kid grazed him with a shotgun, the mom shot him point blank in the head with a rifle. what do you expect to happen??

but then again, i'm not so sure, lol - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PSVP9LuRhU

I completely agree. This was a crap episode. As soon as it was over, I removed the series from my DVR schedule. Seriously, when the guy told the wife to get a pot, put in a few quarts of water and then went to the fridge and handed the wife an onion and a carrot, that was a total Bugs Bunny moment. The only thing scary about this is how these writers can get a freakin' job. I feel ashamed of myself as a human for having watched this. But rest assured it will not happen again.

reply

They are not WGA writers, so they don't normally get jobs writing for US-based TV shows.

IMO it seems TPTB of Fear Itself just accepted anyone to write for them because they simply don't care about the writing quality of the show, LOL.

Check it out:

Unfortunately the powers that be felt that 'Fear Itself's' teleplays needed more tweaking, and once the Writers Guild voted to strike, they turned to nonunion Canadian scribes to get the series ready for lensing. At that point, Garris, a Guild member, quit his brainchild. “I worked harder than ever in my life getting most of the scripts in shape before the strike happened,” he says with frustration.

reply

That's not accurate.

The writers of the show were indeed WGA members. I can verify that, since I wrote "Skin and Bones" with my writing partner, and we've been WGAw members since 1995.

We had to prep our entire episode in just under a week because the writer's strike was about to happen. No one rewrote ours. No one brought in a Canadian non-union guy to replace us.

Mick quit over the overall treatment of the show. If there were Canadian writers who tweaked other episodes, that's a shame, but it did not happen to ours.

reply

I agree - it was crap. The acting of the kids and mom was ... horrific.

reply

I'm glad to see others didn't like it. I was laughing the whole time. Very silly and not scary at all. Also had a stupid script. It kind-of made me think that you might think it was scary if you thought The Mask was scary! This was the first episode that I almost quit watching in the middle. Afterwards, I was very surprised that my hubby said it was his favorite epi of all of them. What?? He was sure I wouldn't be able to sleep. I had no problems whatsoever.

Um yeah I didn't really get the ending. Please correct me if I misunderstood it. What I assumed they did was have the mother kill the father making it a "happy ending", for lack of a better term. That really disappointed me seeing as the other 99 percent of the episode was pretty scary. I was also really ticked off at how long it took the kid to load the rifle. Although the episode was really chilling for me, I couldn't help but laugh at "Here's and onion, here's a carrot...bring it to a rolling boil." I was rolling on the floor at that point.

Idiots are fun. No wonder every village wants one.

How about the ham-handed "Indian lore" from Chief Thundercloud? So predictable.

Was their spread there close to the other wilderness spread earlier in the season with the 2 crazy chicks?

reply

You missed the implication that the mother is now a wendigo too, after she shot him you heard all the same howling noises that happened when the husband freaked out for the first time. Presumably while she was bleeding to death the voice made her the same offer to give her the strength to save her kids and she had already eaten some of the brother or maybe she had some more, she was still in the kitchen with the big pot of brother soup after all.

reply

Never implied. And she never "ate" the brother, she just put the meat in her teeth. Look again, she isn't "eating" anything.

Also no... the mother doesn't become a Wendigo. The howling wind at the end is the spirit of the Wendigo being released once the father is killed. It's pissed off. That's about it.

reply

It's very heavily implied. Even if she didn't eat it when your talking about there's still plenty of soup for her to eat at that point. She needed extra strength to save her children, she was dying and desperate, she would do anything.

What you're suggesting isn't any more out right stated than the mother becoming a wendigo. It's simply down to interpretation. Unless you wrote it (or have a link to the writer discussing it) then you can't say she definitely didn't and you certainly can't say it's not implied because it is. I'm not the only person who thought so. Given the tone of the series over all I think it's more likely it was unhappy ending with mummy wendigo rather than happy ending with the wendigo being defeated. Either is possible but I know which one I lean towards.

reply

The actress who played the wife was awful, but I thought the episode was highly effective and creepy. Doug Jones was great in particular.

reply

these people who almost "quit watching" it.......go figure

I could tell it was filmed in Canada because of the obvious The Bay blanket on the bed. LOL.

reply

Did anyone else see the "your not my dad, dont tell me what to do" story comming from a mile a way. The older kid was joke.

reply

To people who didn't like the episode, did you at least like Doug Jones as the Wendigo?

His acting was a bit cartoonish and over-the-top, but I still think he looked the part and played it well, I found him legitimately creepy. He reminded me of the 'intelligent zombies' of RE4.

It was the sheer creepiness and physical appearance of the father that carried this ep. If they didn't do such a great job at making him look (those teeth) and act the way he did this one would have been a total dud.

If you expect the unexpected doesn't the unexpected then become the expected?

reply

Oh I didn't like the episode at all but like ssimpson-10 mentioned Doug Jones was fantastic. He was the only creepy scary part of "Skin and Bones". He did a terrific job, as did whoever did his makeup. When he's lying in bed with the covers pulled up to his chin and only that skeletal face is peering out with his mad wild eyes...that was creepy. But the woman who played his wife? Awful. And I didn't think the story was that good either. The Wendigo aspect of it was interesting but the writing was so bad, the dialogue for all of the characters except for Gavin/Wendigo was awful (his was hilarious). The plot was muddled, in my opinion, by the relationship of Gavin's wife and brother.

reply

why did you watch it then??? i thought doug jones was fantastic

reply

I liked that it was like a horror comic - more like the Tales from the Crypt episodes.

And I was glad they "repulsed" the audience... that is what HORROR is!

Spoilers Below ... and Spoiler Request!

I need help ... so I watched 95% of this ... some if I had to watch with the sound turned down because my husband got an important phone call. I watched it all ... but didn't hear some of it.

So, I was in on ALL of it ... up until the point that Grady and his wife are sitting at the table eating Rowdy. At that point, I missed almost ALL the dialog. I came BACK in at the point that the older son told his brother, "Are you STUPID? Don't you get it ... he's not our uncle!" So I am LOST ...

I heard Rowdy tell the mom "If I don't come back, tell them the truth ..." and then I read on one of these threads that he was the kids' real dad. Okay ... so ...

Was he the kids' dad? If so, why was she married to Grady? Was she still having an affair with Rowdy? Why did the son think that Grady bought the ranch to give Rowdy somewhere to live???

ARGH ... I can't believe I missed the POINT of the entire show! Can anyone fill me in on the last 10 minutes??? :(

Kyle Glenncross and Chris Bridges from Canada's brilliant FX shop Gaslight Studio Inc. did the makeup.

They didn't really explain it. They made it obvious that everyone except the kids knew the uncle was their real father, but they didn't explain why or how. Grady knew he wasn't the father, but doesn't have a big problem with it. The wife and Rowdy seemed pretty chummy too, like they were (still?) having an affair.

The only thing that would make sense to me is that Grady couldn't have kids, so he asked his brother to donate. After that, the wife and Rowdy developed a bond (maybe a very close one, depending on HOW he donated...) Rowdy wanted to be around to see the boys grow up, but eventually Grady started to feel resentful and angry, since it was really his brother's family now, not his.

reply

Now THAT is a good explanation. They should've hired you as a writer! LOL I think I'm just going to pretend that this was part of the story. haha :)
