Way better than Nymphomaniac, by a mile.

that's not saying much though. At least this was watchable.

Yeah, watchable because it's a lot less provocative and thoughtful and meaningful. Nymphomaniac may not be pleasant to watch, but I find it less offensive to the eyes and mind than watching this drivel.

First of all: how does DOAN begin? With a bunch of sex scenes clearly to be erotic to the viewer. A sex scene doesn't happen in Nymphomaniac in around 25 minutes. Instead we get a tribute to Tarkovsky with a symphony of nature in the realm of the modern world. Do we take these noises as pleasing or annoying? Which is exactly what the main character, Joe's, problem: her natural drive being taken as a nuisance. Obviously it's setting up itself to be more than sex, unlike DOAN.

Second: I am greatly concerned with the amount of reviews this movie has, claiming this to be a real depiction of female sexuality. It's not provocative to make a movie of a woman enjoying sex, but this couldn't be any further from what nymphomania is. Nymphomaniac focuses on the physical effects as well as the mental effects, and all the burden that nymphomania actually causes. In DOAN Varelie only has poorly written male characters with zero attention to their motivations other than to just be a misogynist prick.

Third: Both movies kind of end the same way; both characters have an actualization and appreciate their lives as a sexually active woman in a world that represses them; but for 2 different reasons. DOAN has such shallow reasoning to it's ideas. Nymphomaniac is numerous in ideas and provokes even more afterthought.

Diary of a Nymphomaniac is just the Lifetime movie equivalent of Lar's Von Trier's Nymphomaniac.
