Finally!

Finally some decent Australian movies are being made. First Kokoda now Balibo.

None of the long winded tediously boring and unentertaining pictures that are meant to be sob stories like Rabbit Proof Fence. Most recent Australian movies are either just too bleeding heart or don't capture the imagination. The Proposition, Wolf Creek spring to mind. Wolf Creek never went anywhere and The Proposition could have had a lot cut out of it and it would have still made sense and may have even come up to a reasonable movie standard.

I hope Balibo doesn't go for those artsy shots like most shocking Aussie movies. Even events on true stories are there to be entertaining to the lay public not just the people that have studied art house cinema.

Yeah, finally, a feature film is being made about East Timor, but whether it'll be any good is another question. This happened over thirty years ago, but nobody's touched it - Aussie self-censorship to avoid ofending Indonesia, I guess.

There's plenty of stuff in the history of East Timor that would make a good film, and they're only using a fraction of it. You don't need to dumb down or sex up to do a good thriller.

By the way, "tediously boring" is a tautology, like "appallingly awful" or "dead corpse". In fact, the word "boring" is only used by immature and inarticulate people with short concentration spans.

I saw a preview of it - very well done. It didn't dumb down, and certainly didn't sex up. I recently visited Dili and passed through the border area near Balibo, so it had even more resonance. It's released in Australia on 13th August - but no word on how long the rest of the world will have to wait.

Looking forward to seeing this film, I've heard so much about the real life events that took place, about time they showed how shocking it really was even if its through a film. Australian goverment hushed it all up coz they didn't want to offend Indonesia, and while I love the Indonesians and am going there later this year, what they (the soldiers) did to these men was sick and evil, feel sorry for the family of the men. I'm hoping this is going to be a great aussie film.

You think thats your husband, you think his going to come and save you don't you?
