BAD REMAKE

This film cannot compare to the original film of 1974 with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. It was filled with foul language and totally devoid of any class on the part of anyone! What is it with the nitwits who engage in remakes only to make a mess of them? Why don't they just play tiddlywinks and leave us alone with their overpriced remakes such as this one?

It just shows again that the '70s were the greatest decade for film bar none - at least in my humble opinion. It was the combination of old Hollywood class with a modern sensibility. This movie's got it all - great actors, good writing and an incredible music score by David Shire.

i was not around in the 70's so even though i did see the oringal wich is still better this one is also very good, sorry guys.

Totally agree. Remake poor films by all means but leave the best alone.

The original was a good caper movie.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest disparities ever between original and remake. This thing is just plain old stupid. I'm shocked it's sitting at 6.5 and I don't consider 6.5 to be a particularly good score. Even the review on the homepage that gives it 7/10 stars has stupid leaps in logic just like the movie. It shows you the type of twit it takes to watch this atrocity and go, "Yep, that didn't just insult every shred of my intelligence while decimating the brilliant original."

Well, I'm glad you all exposed yourselves to the original. It's one of my favorite heist movies. We'll just have to agree to disagree about the remake. I would have vilified it regardless of its attachment to a much better film. It just has problems that are just that even as a stand alone film. Completely unaccounted for turns in the plot. Horribly edited. Horrible pacing. Poor characterization. Pointless FX. I was actually embarrassed for DW and JT.

well this film was a mixed bag in my opinion. On the plus side it did have good action, good "updating" to modern times with technology and such, a decent script and the element of excitement.
on the negative side, it lacks the humor of the original, the mayor was a boring character (and i love james gandolfini) the original mayor was much funnier in his stuck in the frilly bed scenes and Robert Shaw and his crew were better. I love Robert Shaws COLD performance in the original, he froze the screen with his coldness and his calculating nature. Travolta was just playing the same angry character he has played in other films nothing new or original there. there was better pacing in the original as well. This movie tried to be all Travolta with no focus on the other members of the crew which i did not like.

A guy kills, in cold blood, HOW many people and youre worried about the *beep* foul language??

See, there was an example of using foul language when it is out of place. Saying the word, *beep*, or *beep* or *beep* or greaseball in the setting of mass murder is realistic and SHOULD be in the movie...if you are offended, don't watch it...of course the murder doesn't offend you.

HEY!!! HOW COME GREASEBALL WASNT BLANKED OUT!!! HUH???? BECAUSE ITS NOT THE "N" word!!????!!! But its the "G" word!!!!! And Im offended!!

I didn't know this is a remake and there's an original until this thread. But I can easily agree that the original is better. The remake had annoying characters all around. Travolta and his fat stomach and high whiny voice, Washington and his usual arrogant and overconfident speech and tone, James Gandolfini was a joke, etc. It tried too hard to fit in the modern day type action excitement that feels like any other action movie but not as great.

unnecessary remake. Bad is a given.

I agree about the language. Totally unnecessary. And I hate when people complain about language in a movie...but this time it truly was unnecessary. "I *beep* love you," on the web cam. Really? When it was Snakes on the Plane, it was ridiculously funny. This time it's just sad.

I would watch the original...but there were just parts of this one that were so dumb that I just want to forget the movie altogether. (Subway boss kicks him off the radio (would never happen), or drive through the streets of NYC instead of fly a helicopter in 2009 (never happen), or the 2 other gunmen come out of the same hotel and just walk away (plain stupid), and the web cam being completely useless.
