How were the lions cages cleaned?

Once the big cats were put outdoors, seems like they stopped showing Terry interacting with them except through the cage. But their cages still needed to be cleaned of their feces. I know they said Terry's son got along great with the large female lion. But I'm wondering still - how did Terry or his son or whoever did it, go into the lion's den safely?
