Not the typical Mexican movie

Don't take me wrong, I'm not a cinema expert, but most of the Mexican movies from the last 40 years desperately seek to show the Mexican context from it different social classes as the main goal of the movie. That was ok for the fist 10 years, but lately it turned totally annoying.
I was very excited to see "Bajo la Sal" because the trend above exposed was broken; I hope other writers and directors from all Latin America follow this too.
First, the plot of this movie is not based on terrorism, narcotraffic, complicated love affairs or any other Mexican cliché; it is based on a more global cliche like the murders of female students at a county school and a frustrated old police guy who wants to resolve these crimes.
Second, the director did a good job to make this movie look like a real movie and not like a Mexican soap opera as much of the Mexican movies look like. Don't ask for specific arguments behind my statement; perhaps it was because of the foreign sound track and background music, and mainly because of the actors didn't overact.
Finally, the film will stick you nervous to your chair until it finishes, the music makes its part here.

I also list some minor details that you will find interesting compared to other Mexican films:
- No overuse of Mexican bad language.
- No overuse of Mexican comedy.
- No overuse of sex and love scenes.
- No happy ending.

I agree that the movie has an intriguing storyline, some fine acting and good production values. I think the whole stop motion thing was gimmicky and just represented an overload of red herrings designed to direct our suspicions towards Victor. But overall this film is definitely worth a look.🐭
