Not the film in the trailer

The actual film is charming, visually inventive and more sophisticated than just the slapstick they focus on in the U.S. trailers. It's all very British so maybe it wouldn't have been a bigger hit in the states than it was one way or the other (although it did moderately well here) but persoanlly I would have taken the kids to see it in the theaters if the trailer resembled the actual movie. Pleasantly surprised, even if these boards are filled with a lot of animosity (like there is for every movie it seems) suggesting a far less well crafted film had been made.

Well the American trailer reflected what most American audiences are willing to pay to watch, most of them are not interested in little quirky british comedys.

If it's any consolation, the UK trailers were criticized a lot too. I was one of many who, on seeing the inital trailer, were concerned that the tone would be all wrong. I needn't have worried.

Having said that; I found myself sitting in the cinema next to a gentleman who'd decided to take the grandchildren to see it because he enjoyed the trailer. So, different strokes...
