Should I see this? I love Mr. Argento's work from his early works through the 80's. Though I didn't care so much for THE STENDHAL SYNDROME or MASTERS OF HORROR: PELTS. I've heard pretty negative reviews about his later works such as: THE CARD PLAYER, MOTHER OF TEARS, MASTERS OF HORROR: JENIFER. Plus I'm not a fan of Brody and wish Mr. Liotta stayed on. So, should I see this if possible or wait for the DVD.
So far, the early film reviews that have come from across the ocean have been positive, especially from the Edimburgh Film Festival. Those reviews have stated that although the film cannot compare with Argento's early classics like DEEP RED, TENEBRAE and OPERA ,but the European critics say that GIALLO is much better and more entertaining than MOTHER OF TEARS, THE CARD PLAYER and SLEEPLESS.
Download it. Nobody involved deserves royalty checks for such a waste of time. Everyone involved is better than this (except perhaps Emanuelle Seigner).
I LOL'ed at your statement @distant-skies! Anyway, I think that this film is not so bad, you'd have to do that. It's a lot worse than Otis, but certainly as bad as what other Hollywood film house are churning out by the minute.
Any Argento on the big screen is an experience, even with a less than stellar offering and/or a disrespectful crowd. The three Argento films I've seen theatrically are SUSPIRIA, THE CARD PLAYER and GIALLO. While SUSPIRIA is far and away the best of these, I enjoyed all three screenings immensely. That said, if you haven't seen much of Argento's recent output, I would suggest tracking some of them down on DVD to get a flavour for the sort of material he's been producing of late.
For what it's worth, I think THE STENDHAL SYNDROME is a masterpiece, enjoyed GIALLO, THE CARD PLAYER and MOTHER OF TEARS, thought SLEEPLESS and DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? were okay, and hated THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, JENIFER and PELTS.
Giallo's gotta be the funniest killer Argento ever had in any of his movies )) I didn't hate this film, as I was expecting to. It's well acted, well shot, even the quality of line delivery is very high by Argento's films' standards. But the story is kind of limp in the end.
