why does he feel the need to lie so much?

I am watching this on netflix now and I just don't understand why this kid feels the need to just make stuff up all the time. You can say "I'm homeschooled" instead of " I had bird flu" or " no, I don't know off the top of my head where that room is" instead of giving bogus directions. Not having a lot of social interaction with people his age is not an excuse to lie about stupid *beep*
