when the pipe is removed

Why do they show him wading in a pool of water?

reply

I dunno exactly, but he was "swimming with the fishes", so to speak.

I believe it's one of those film reference things Gulager gets that 99% of others don't.

I feel like, at one time, I would have known what he was referencing, but I can't place it off the top of my head.

I thought it meant that he was drowning in his own blood. The pipe kept him alive but once it was removed all of the blood came rushing out.

I think that interpretation may be valid as well. But all the "whale" imagery and all reminded me of a lot of other films and scenes...so I just assumed it had to be a reference to something which I was likely missing.

Just like in the boxing scene in the movie Snatchwhen Brad Pitt is knocked flat on his back and it cuts to him going under water. It is a reference to his state of conscious when the pipe was remove. He was about to go under and drown(pass out), but he was struggling to keep his mind afloat(awake).

and if you noticed the shark passing underneath him. Simple imagery illustrating that he is about to die... All us left-brainers got it. :)

reply

Lol , you re thinking too much . Like someone said before , it s more like the blood filled his head and was therefor , dying .

reply

yeah left brainer, I was just lookin for a reference or something like ash was sayin

Despite all the baby eating, eye gouging, head pooing and monster bumming, I found the pipe removal sequence to be the most creepy. I interpreted it as Swank's total sensory deprivation after having his brain mangled. Literally floating and locked in the confines of his mind. Luckily he dies shortly after. I thought he'd be trapped in a vegetative state or something. I was glad to see slasher get his though. Of all the characters, that guy just irritated me.

Also, I found the quick dispatch of the gung-ho types (John Nelson etc)to be a bit irritating. Though I get that it's a sort of franchise joke that, if a character looks like they can kick ass they probably won't get the chance to, it's still a bit annoying when Secrets kills that guy or the kick-ass guy loses his arms.
