Hugely underrated
I just finished watching Coffin Rock and I thought it was fantastic. It really annoys me to see an aussie film as strong as this slip under the radar.
It's sad that this film hasn't been given the respect it deserves simply because the majority of viewers are to narrowminded to appreciate anything different.
On one hand you have a bunch of pretentious critics who praise the first half of the film for its complex themes and subtle setup, yet they dislike the second half because of the genre/thriller element. On the other hand you have the genre fans who think the first half is slow and boring, but they enjoy the second half. So we've got one group of people saying it's a generic drama, and the other seem to be saying it's a boring thriller. Why has this film not been praised for simply nailing both elements?
Have genre fans become that dumbed down that they can't appreciate a thriller that spends time building it's characters and themes. Have critics become that stuck up that they can't appreciate a bit of blood and action.
Coffin Rock deserves to be remembered as a complex, slow boiling thriller with fantastic acting and production value.
I hope the director reads this (I know i'd be trawling the IMDB boards of my own movies) as you deserve a lot more public praise than I have seen on these boards so far.
