Question about what happened (spoilers)

-spoiler warning-

Does anyone understand what was going on when Evan threw himself onto the car (when Robbie was seemingly trying to run Jessie over)? Was Evan still in kill-anything-that-gets-in-the-way mode (i.e. kill Robbie) or was the psycho actually trying to save Jessie? The latter is kind of unlikely, but... any thoughts?

reply

Rob swerved and went for Evan at the last minute. Evan didn't throw himself on the car.

This makes more sense, but it really did seem like Evan threw himself onto the car. That's what made me confused. Maybe I'm wrong though...

reply

There's no maybe about it; you're wrong.

When Evan picks up the rock he's running for Jessie who's standing there expecting Rob to run her over but then he jerks over and runs into Evan instead. It's fairly blatant. The only question that arises is whether Rob ever intended to run over Jessie or if he saw Evan the whole time and they just made it look like he intended to.

reply

I think he would've hit her, but seeing Evan running to attack her reminded him, if only subconsciously, that it was him that tore his family apart. He was obviously emotional and overwhelmed, while still feeling betrayed, and wanted to express his pain. But in the end, he was a good (and sensible) person, and clobbered the psycho with his grill, not his unfaithful wife. Nice ending, but I felt confused as the scene was unfolding. Through all of the struggling it was an above average feature directorial debut.

Rob was rushing to save her, not kill her.

While there might theoretically have been a moment when he was tempted to kill her b/c of his anger, he was mainly just rushing to get to her (to save her), especially once he saw Evan. He couldn't point to Even until the last minute without tipping him off.

Evan was clearly trying to kill Jessie.

I agree with you. Rob was a coward to face his own problem and made his wife's life miserable. What kind of writer could arrange such a man to kill his victim. If so, it will make no sense at all.
