Review - Frontrunners

On one level, Frontrunners is a charming film about three ambitious New York youths who are out to win a school election. But Stuyvesant High School can also be seen as a microcosm that exposes our own voting practices. "Is student government a good preparation for governing in the greater world?" asks a teacher towards the beginning of the documentary. Many of the students at Stuyvesant High think not, dismissing the election as "just a popularity contest." But aren't our own "adult" elections merely popularity contests? More people said they would prefer to drink a beer with George W. Bush than his Democratic challengers.
