The sheer bland badness of the musical play within the movie sank it

It was good until they actually put on "Hamlet 2" which was pretty bad . The movie tries to treat it as wonderful...and it is bad...a failure that makes the movie a failure.

So was "Springtime for Hitler" (from "The Producers") meant to be bad but it was so bad it was highly amusing and far superior to Hamlet 2.

Hamlet 2 had its funny moments but fell a long way behind when compared to say "The Producers".

You missed the joke. They obviously weren't trying to make it good. Man, some jokes are just lost on people.

Yea it's supposed to be vapid but catchy, which is exactly what would catch on with people.
