This thread is a few years old, so I'm guessing you've long since seen it or decided not to. My feeling going into the movie was the same (a fan of Dali, not necessarily a fan of Pattinson).

Oddly enough, I ended up respecting Pattinson and losing some respect for Dali if he was indeed the way they portrayed him in the film. Pattinson plays the role like a young Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon, Arizona Dream), i.e., awkward & sorta nerdy. I liked that part. But as the film progresses and Dali becomes famous, the character became increasingly arrogant.

Now we all know that the real Dali had an arrogant streak, but we love him for it because of his bizarre sense of humor. However the movie highlighted how rude & hurtful he could be. Who knows if he was really that way, but like I said, it's believable because Dali was known to make casual comments that could be construed as insulting. He was definitely a say-it-out-loud kinda guy.

Pattinson's performance was pretty good, and I'm happy to say he's no longer just "the twilight kid" in my mind. I wouldn't hesitate to see him in another quirky film like this.
