Question - the mother's involvement

I watched the movie (online, free as part of my subscription from my Rental site), but a few things I didn't catch (too much noise going on in the street outside and if I "rewind" the movie with the set up on the site, it starts the movie from the beginning so I missed some stuff).

Anyway, it was the part where the mother is responsible for putting the architect in this pit. Was this revenge for him murdering her husband or was she involved with the architect and put him down there to "keep" him?

Alot of things were confusing for me, but it was a not bad movie all the same (for free anyway).

She says at one point something like 'All those people... I did it for them', so I would assume that meant she did it as an act of revenge.

In one scene she is seemingly talking to her dead husband and says something like "I promise to make him suffer." I didn't get it at the time.

I think it was both. Revenge for everyone who was murdered and even more so for her husband, who, after 11 years, she was still talking to and plotting this demolition as retribution for his murder. She made it pretty clear that she didn't want Sam down there (at first) because, in her mind, she wasn't responsible for anything that had happened. Later, of course, she knew she couldn't let her out because Sam would tell what was going on.
Pretty messed-up mom.

"Level head? I think mine's level, and yours is the one things would roll off of."

I seen it on cable the other day when I had off. I just noticed it coming on after I had taped "From Hell" so I went ahead and taped this too. It wasn't too bad and at least I didn't rent it.
(Yes I still use my VCR)
