Mischa Barton NOT BAD for a direct to dvd horror film
I am cautious about renting direct-to-dvd horror movies in the rental stores, especially since dvd rentals now exceed $5.00 U.S. currency.
I rented WALLED in because of two signs on the dvd box that clued me in this might be a decent quality horror flick
1) The dvd manufacturers cleverly listed the well-known actors and actresses at the top edge of the dvd box. The well-known actors and actresses listed on the dvd is one GOOD sign the movie has good acting and a decent script.
2) The dvd box listed film festival awards. I presume that film festivals all over the world don't award good horror film awards for no good reason. Whenever I see the film festival award symbols on the dvd box, I give the movie serious consideration.
In the case of WALLED IN, it listed well-known actors and actresses and two film festival awards. The description of the movie's plot on the dvd case was intriguing. I rented the dvd and was not disappointed.
WALLED IN is actually very good and worth renting.
I didn't know much about MISCHA BARTON, but assumes she was a lightweight actress. In 'Walled In' she does a surprisingly good job portraying a very serious role requiring deeper depth of characterization and drama.
Some imdb posters made an issue out of the scar under her left eye. I feel the scar actually fits in with her movie character and persona. Mischa Barton plays the role of a strong-minded, independant, explosives engineer working girl in a semi-outdoors occupation. Typically such women in highly physically active, semi-outdoors or outdoors occupations dispense with makeup, hair styling, and fancy clothes, which all makes sense given their vocations. In real life a person engaged in highly physical activity and related occupations are going to get into more scrapes, resulting in scars.
I liked the role in which Mischa Barton was strong and independant, but was still feminine and vulnerable enough to react in a vulnerable when confronted with a situation completely out of her control and dangerous. I think most of us would be almost as vulnerable in a similar set of events.
I will address another imdb post, NUDITY, or the lack thereof. Mischa Barton has done nudity before. I didn't understand the movie's coy reticence about showing any Mischa Barton nudity. There are scenes of implied nudity and I don't understand why the coyness. After falling to the underground base of the building, it's obvious the architect prisoner undressed her to nude. But he doesn't clean off the blood on her face, which doesn't make sense. We don't know why he stripped Mischa naked and then place blankets on her. Of course this might be a very subtle insinuation that while she was uncnscious, the architect prisoner disrobed Barton and raped her, but you'll have to deduce this for yourself. Otherwise there was no reason for him to strip her.
