You Don't Con Your Team

I just finished watching The Jailhouse Job and once again the frustration surfaces. In season two Sofie conned the entire team trying to obtain the second David to go with her first one. She never apologized and there was a little ranting and raving, but everyone forgave her and moved on. Nate makes a deal with the authorities at the end of season two where he goes to prison and the rest of the team goes free. In the premier of season three everyone is angry with him and going off saying "You don't con your team". He explains he did what he did so they could go free. However, the team keeps letting him know episodes later that what he did was wrong. Why is what Nate did worse than what Sofie did? I would think it would be the reverse.

I think part of it was Nate's high opinion of himself. Up to now, he has always been very adamant about "Not being a thief" and making sure the crew knew him as the only honest person on the team.

At this point, the team realizes that this "honest" person is the only one of them in jail. Somewhere between their guilt and him not sharing the plan, or looking for other options as he normally does, they are just having a hard time "letting in go." They all understood Sophie's reasons - she is a "grifter / thief," so it was easier to accept what happened. With Nate, they could never be sure that something like this might blindside them again down the road.

The gang trusts Ford and when he disappoints them, it crushes their insides that they let someone get in! ;-/

This makes the most sense. And what's interesting is that he conned them more beginning in that third season, like what he did to Hardison to get him to play so well in The Schaherezade Job.

In addition to the answers already given:

Nate lied to the team about the objective of the con while they were running the con. He led them to believe that they were going to arrange for Kadjic and Culpepper to be arrested and that they would all escape together with the money, when instead he was setting himself up to take the fall for them without their knowledge.

Sophie in the First David Job had an ulterior motive (to obtain both David statues), but she wasn't deceiving them about what the con and its planned results were going to be. Nate, by running a different con than they were told he was running, put the team in a position where they could be blindsided and unable to react appropriately because they were not aware of what the actual game was. Since Nate is the main person within the team who the rest rely on for direction, that's a serious breach of trust.

Sophie was selfish, but Nate was the one who treated them like pawns instead of partners - and then he hurt their feelings further by refusing to let them break him out of prison as they wanted to.
