I think she did okay, she wasn't incredibly brilliant, but not god-awful. There were parts where I thought her acting was painfully flat, like when she was fighting with her boyfriend about the trip. On the other hand, though, there were parts when she definately came alive, like when she was telling the customer about the man with the q-tip, she seemed genuinely upset and disgusted.

I think maybe with a handful of acting classes and more experience, Sasha Grey could be a successful mainstream actress, she's certainly beautiful enough.

She definitely acted like a pornstar would, but perhaps a bit better. Yeah.

I totally agree with you on the flatness of her acting when she was arguing. At a certain point, she wasn't just closing her emotions; she was just inhuman.

Somehow I don't think the acting classes are going to happen for her. She can make tons of money without it, and doesn't seem to have a problem with the sex industry, so why bother?

I thought it was a fascinating choice and I couldn't help getting involved with the actual story. So for making that happen, I have to appreciate the work that she did on this film.

Honestly, I thought it was an excellent performance. Sure she's cold, that's the character, only allowing glimmers of emotions to break through in a few very specific scenarios. A lot of people seem to not be able to give the film a fair shake mostly due to Grey's involvement, but damn, how judgmental is that?

Yeah, she could have come from a much worse background than porn...like soap opera acting.

That's my belief and I'm sticking to it.

I'm guessing if it was a big name actress, or just someone not invloved in Porn, they would have been hailed as "The next big thing." I'm not all that into porn (I had no idea who Sasha Grey was), but I do get how bias can rear its ugly head.

i totally disagree. Her involvement was one of the only reasons this movie got any attention. She was bad and still is getting a lot of positive reviews, mostly because i am sure expectations were low. She has anti-charisma as a nonporn actress. There was nothing in her performance that qualified as acting. I basically agreed with the self-aware review from the disgusting john as a criticism of her overall performance. unsophisticated, lacking in affect, and unengaging

funny you say this, did you know that there's a few soap stars that enter said industry in just that way, I don't remember exactly which actor actually crossed over, I believe it was Sylvester Stallone but hey thats a subject for another board. lol Actually there are also quite a few stars that started out in other legitimized venues as well. However it appears that males have a much easier task in the actual acceptablity factor. Maybe we'll lose all the shame-based labling soon as well. It's so sad that in the 70s it was so much more mainstream than it is today. We might actually get some decent talent back again as well.

Dislike what UR viewing _what UR hearing _whatever's happening! U could go elsewhere or turn it off

i agree that the character was cold, inhuman. She just seemed like someone who'd let go of boundaries far too many times. And a couple of times in the movie, they capitalized on this cold demeanor: 1. The interviewer says something about the insides (of her) being all screwed up, and most blatantly: 3. When a narrator begins describing a character (presumably chelsea) as having a 'flat affect'. She played the perfect prostitute, unable to feel without feeling hurt--unable to risk having many emotions. I found myself despising her about midway through the film--particularly the part where she is arguing with her boyfriend. She's independent, but she's also a bitch. Even in this moment when emotion might be necessary, she still holds back. She's a snob. She can't feel anymore...

I haven't even seen the film and I already knew she was gonna act like that. If that's what they where aiming for she would be a pretty good choice for this role. I'm confident that she is a cold harted snobby bitch in real life too. She should stay in mainstream films and stop making porn though, sure shes hot but she'll never learn too STFU during sex.

I agree I was not surprised by sasha's performance. I do believe that anyone in her line of work would have to be that way in order to do the job.

She was ill prepared for this film in all ways. The film failed because of her. She is not an actor, nor was she prepared to take on a starring role in a mainstream film. Yet somehow they made a cable series from this hot mess of a film.

I think she did a nice job in this movie. People who are complainng about her lack of acting simply didn't get this movie. It was the whole point in my humble opinion. Love to see what she can do in another type of movie. And even if she can't pull it off she's still hotter than 90% of the other Hollywood actresses so it'll still be worth the look. :-)

I'm not sure what I think of the movie itself though... I think Soderbergh tried a little too hard to be original and ended up like some sort of desperate filmschool graduate. But at least he's still trying different things, props for that. Overall: I liked it, even though it was a litle flawed.

You're all insane.

SHe gave the worst performance I've ever seen in any major motion picture, EVER. She barely said her lines without stumbling. Not a hint of emotion, or any real response to the other actors' lines.

for the character she was playing i thought she was spot on target.

if this was transformers 2, this performance would have been dreadful since it would have been totally wrong. can she really act? hard to tell from just this one film, since the role doesn't require (or permit) much dynamic range.

I really liked her acting...i found her very natural actually. Didn't force it like many other adult film actress would have acted in a mainstreams. She was cold because of the character. She stumbles and the start, and I think although not intentional, it works. Actually...if you saw this movie expecting a great acting performance...clearly you don't know who Sasha Grey is.

I saw this movie because I like Soderbergh, and Sasha. I think it's kind of a neat, brave experiment...the Porno Girl experiment. Would like to see more mainstream directors be ballsy like that!

First I wasn't sure if her acting was good, or if she was just being herself.
Which is hard enough on a filmset. Then later there were a few scenes where she showed that she really can act. Obviously the scene where she starts to tell about her experience with the disgusting guy. And mostly because of the scene where the customer she fell for asks her if she wants to spend the weekend with him. You can see in her face that she has fallen for that guy. I am taking the wild guess that that didn't really happen but that she was acting. That scene was veeeeery good.
But the film was a bit boring all in all.

Some scenes she was great in, others it was a little forced. On the whole I think she did fine, it was a good start, but then it didn't ask that much of her. I'm not sure how good she would be if she had to do something beyond the absolutely natural.

She's been in porn business for a while, she seen stuff you'd probably cringe into embryo pose and call for momma while sucking your thumb... i'm amazed she can show that much emotion, on the job she has to fake everything.
