Akani- most stagnant character arc ever?

Seriously. What a waste of a character. Obviously, this show doesn't lend a lot of time to exploring the supporting characters, but Darnell got a girlfriend and the thing with his brother and the gambling thing, and Swenton got a relapse. Akani has an implied crush on William and, oh yeah, nothing. We get it, she's hot and has money. Tada! Boring.

I've finally found what I need to be happy, and it's not friends, it's things.

"implied"? i thought in the first episode they established they slept together....

i dunno, maybe i heard it wrong...

It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack. Not rationality...

reply

Yeah, William says straight out that they slept together, that's not what I mean. They just keep hinting at Akani's subsequent crush on William, not much else. That's no where near decent character development.

I agree. I think they just keep her in the script for eye-candy.

They lose a big potential in not giving her more meatier roles in the show. Not just her, but all the chacters. Even the kids. But to focus on Akani...

It seems to me that all they've done in the episodes I've watched (a few from both seasons) is dress her like a hooker and let her walk around with an emo look on her face. And it infuriates me as a female t see a strong actress as talented as she seems to be being shut down as she is. So many times, she could have just taken the case on her own and handled it, but had to defer to William or another man on the show. And all he or they say is "Akani, go check this out and call me.". She does, but usually is escorted by one of the others. She seems to me she could handle the girls and most of the guys, so I don't see she needs an escort.

Case in point, I just finished watching "five little words" and she could have handled all of that show while William baby-sat Swenton through his detox. But to get into the sorority house (just to take pictures of the mark's room for William of course - no BIG jobs for little Akani), she was outfitted in a black mini-skirt with a garter-belt with thigh-highs and boots all in black. I even think she had a corset. It was still daylight!!! She said she was a friend of an alumni and wanted to see her room as she was breezing through town.

WHO BREEZES THROUGH TOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY IN A GARTER BELT & THIGH HIGHS AND BOOTS? unless you are on your way to a 4:00 warm-up for your stripper pole routine and even then, I would think you would change there.

Anyway, I lost my point in all that. I think. Maybe not. But in the episode she could have worn a t-shirt and shorts, which is normally what sorority girls wear and still got in. She could have done that entire show. She could have tackled the poor frail bulemic girl and got her treatment and STILL had time to show up at the end to show Melissa how beautiful she is so Melissa could see who William slept with when they were separated, which at the end of that crazy episode , was the reason Melissa allowed William back to her bed. Yea, you know it too. You saw how she kept watching Akani kiss Swenton. And Melissa wanted to see Akani and William was nervous and Akani coming to his house. I know things changed in Season II between Melissa and William, but that invitation was based on a little jealousy as she saw William a little differently. IMHO.

But beyond that, if they would stop dressing her up as the Akani-doll, they would find she is a very talented actress. But they can't seem to stop themselves.

Something tells me they like the Akani-doll and won't give her up to a better role or take a risk of with her. Her loss and ours too. I think she is a great actress.

Change the world.

What kind of drugs did Akani abuse, does anyone know? Does she have family money or some other source of income?

I totally agree with what everyone is saying. I really wish they would do more with her AND the rest of the characters. I like the show and it is still very watchable, but it has been extremely stagnant lately in terms of story and character development/interaction. Like the whole divorce thing was just glossed over completely with almost no emotion - it was the most low-key divorce paper signing ever. I think something like that would be huge for a recovering addict to deal with emotionally and all we got were a few "in thought" looks on their faces. I know they're like setting stuff up for further down the line, but I miss the interaction that was there last season between all the characters.

As for what Akani's drug of choice was I don't recall them ever saying. My guess would be that it was a "party" drug like ecstasy or maybe meth - or maybe even just pot, who knows at this point. And yes, her father is wealthy and lives somewhere overseas and sends her money and she doesn't really talk to him as was mentioned last season.

I agree, and it really is wasting a good character. We probably know less about Akani than any character on the show. Not even what her addiction was. Both her and Swenton aren't getting much screen time this season. In fact, this season the show seems to have turned into all Benjamin Bratt all the time. I've noticed that he is now listed as a producer. Do you suppose that has anything to do with it?

reply

I read somewhere that this season is going to focus more on William and his family, which I think is a mistake, seeing as how they're separating anyway, and his family members are obnoxious. I liked the setup last season better.

oh my gosh last season had william and his family all over it! how could they possibly focus on it more....

I'd at least like them to say straight out what Akani's addiction was.

If you ask me, I think her addiction may have been to sex.

First, there is the obvious: the fact that she and William have had an affair . . . then there is the episode where her grandmother keeps asking her if every mysterious thing in her life is about a boy she likes, to which Akani always replies ambiguously, "It's always a boy."

Also, there is the sexual tension that always exists around her and her co-workers. William, Swenton, even Darnell and now William's son Ben . . . all of these guys can barely handle her overt sexuality. A good example is when Swenton is explaining to Akani that her mannerisms are part of the things that have guys so on edge around her.

Also, there is that time when Akani almost slept with a client in San Francisco, when she felt that she was being rejected by William . . . the same client who rubbed her the wrong way when he came on to her by asking her what her personal past addiction was, hinting that he hoped it was to sex.

I know it's not much, but based on that, I'm thinking that she was a sex addict.

well, there is still a lot of time left to explore the rest of the characters. Maybe the first couple of seasons are supposed to be more about William and all the various addicts from each episode, and then they will delve further in to everyone else later in the series (like, what her addiction is). No idea...

In one episode though, it was hilarious when William said, "Akani, put on some pants." I'm sure everyone has been thinking that since the pilot! (I have)

The garter is too much! It's out of control.

It's not her fault it's the *beep* writers & the ppl of the show. They flat out said that they're making season 2 more about William & less about the team. Which I think is bullsh*t. They said most viewers want to know more about William.

WHERE THE F&CK DID THEY GET THAT FROM? everytime I read opinions, most of us don't give a hoot about his family.

I hate his family view points. We get it. Blah blah blah. I want to know more about the team, the history, their lives, etc.

Who give a hoot about him dealing with his annoying family, whiny kids, & b*tchy wife. It's all so predictable with them.

reply

I totally agree....they have no real idea on just what it is they want his family to do....for sure in regard to his ex wife.

One minute she's running around with her new job, the next she's kissing William tenderly....for every look of it being final there is a look she gives that seems to want them to get back together.

It's frustrating and aggravating for the viewer....JUST LIKE A REAL LIFE "nice" DIVORCE!

Nobody wants to see that.

I'm just hoping this season has not tanked this once promising show.

reply

I, too, think the family dynamics are a bit confusing. It doesn't bother me that much, or put me off the show, though.

On a recent episode, one of the kids said, "you went through so much only to give up (on the marriage)now." It's a pretty good point, I think. I can't figure out why it's now too difficult compared to before. Maybe they just evolved that way...

reply

I had always figured that she was a sex addict. They've really made zero mention of her having much of a habit. That would also fit in with her over-sexed attitude towards Banks... but I don't know enough about... nymphomania to say much more.
