I agree -- it would have been Clooney. He's involved in other facets of the business besides acting, which tends to lead to greater respect among your peers in Hollywood. He's apparently an affable, sociable guy, well-liked in Hollywood, and professional in how he conducts himself. He also gave a solid performance in Michael Clayton. Johnny Depp's day will come.
yeah but i keep wondering how many times johnny can keep pushing out outstanding performances. I hope he wins at least once, he deserves it. And i know most are going to say that he has acted before but as only really become a bankable, household name for 5 years as opposed to Peter O'Toole who has been acting for over 40 years, but like Peter O'Toole i find Johnny's performances interesting to watch, always. I think he is clever and unique and has finally been given a chance to prove himself.
I loved George Clooney in Michael Clayton but i didn't think he was Best Actor good. I like roles when I look at the people and i don't see the actor because they do things like change their appearance and voice. Thats why i wanted Johnny Depp or Daniel Day Lewis to win. I was right about one of them.

I would say Johnny Depp solely because of it being the third time he was nominated. Now the Academy has somewhat strung along other nominees like Martin Scorcese and Al Pacino, but I thought if Daniel Day Lewis was not in this race, Depp would likely win.
Thoughts?
Probably Clooney. I don't think Depp would've won, although he is overdue. I think Depp will win when he doesn't do a Tim Burton movie. The Academy has sticks up their asses so I don't think they would give him an Oscar for a weird movie.

sharei liked Michael Clayton one hell of a lot better than Sweeney Todd and I thought Clooney was much more deserving of the Oscar than Johnny Depp. I was pulling for Daniel Day Lewis to win though, because he put on the best performance by an actor in a very long while. No one could possibly have beat him this year. But if it wasn't for him, I would have been all for George.
