Was it ever explained...

...why they are doing this show in LA instead of NY? As far as I know, LA is a television/film town and has nothing to do with dance (except for maybe music videos), whereas NY is known as being one of the major cities for dance (broadway, ballet, etc.). It seems to me they should be in NY, not LA.

did they have to explain it?
well, this is a show, and like you said, LA known more as a television town.
SYTYCD is also filmed in LA.
what's the prize for this show anyway?

i'll give you my pickle for a nickel.

Probably because real estate is extremely expensive in NYC, and they need big wide open spaces for multiple rehearsals at once, contests, etc. LA has loads of giant sprawling spaces. In NYC every inch of space costs bundles.

I can think of very few reality shows that are filmed in NYC -- the only ones I can think of off-hand are Queer Eye, and even they only needed a tiny little den for the five guys to sit around the TV in, and that's all; and Make Me a Supermodel, which only needed a couple of rooms: catwalk room, and practice/workout room.

Plus as mentioned there are plenty of TV crew in LA.

What's the big deal where its filmed?

They'd still be doing the same challenges and everything.

P.S. The prize is $100,000, Nigel. :]

i knew about the money, but that's all?!
nothing to do with dance? like a contract with a broadway show or something?

There are a ton of reality shows filmed in NY...Project Runway, MMAS as you said, America's Next top Model, pretty much any show having to do with the fashion industry is filmed there. I just thought it would be cool for it to be in NY because it is also a huge center for dance/theater, whereas LA really isn't. I think there could have been better challenges in NY.

well Top Model just came off five seasons of filming in LA, and they moved the show back to NY because Tyra moved to NYC for reasons unexplained. she took production of Top Model and her talk show with her, though I'm unclear on which show or if either one prompted her to move. the quality of Top Model seems to have gone up in terms of fashion since getting back to New York. it's only slightly less of a farce, but probably won't have the same quality as season 2.

and I agree it was probably budget constraints -- this is a new show in the same vein of other Magical Elves productions but there was never a guarantee of ratings success. they spent a lot on promoting this show, and it seems to have helped, but they may not have as much for this show as they do for a successful hit like Project Runway (filmed in NYC) or Top Chef (filmed in various locations throughout the US). it also seems that this show may be a little more of an uncertainty because of the way Make Me A Supermodel did. it doesn't seem to be suffering much from being in LA -- the Achilles heel is the short rehearsal time.

Nigel, from what I gather from what Elizabeth said in the first episode, its just $100,000 and the chance to perform for the top choreographers in the country. I'm not sure if they get a dance contract with a big show or anything as well though. Does anyone know?

P.S. Is the show doing well?

That's not a ton, that's only three ... and I've explained why they can afford to film there whereas SIUAD can't, plus the fashion industry is there. The Apprentice is also filmed in NYC, but there is no real estate budget at all for that one, as they only use Trump real estate.
