Rican, then you must watch the show for character and personality alone, because the dancing in SYTYCD is FAR superior ... in so many ways.

SYTYCD is so damn good... and the dancers are ten times better than most of the jokers who got on this show ... well, I think Nick and Cody would make it on the show.. but I'm not sure abuot any other dancers...

who else...mMochi is good enough, but she is 30 and that's the cut off age
The dancer on 'so you think' are so much better.

I agree with VictoriaNYC. Cody would make it, maybe Michelle, but NONE of the others would have. Tovah was good, but she wouldn't have made it because her personality wasn't there. Oscar's technique wasn't that great. Miguel is just a train wreck (how's he's made it this far and actually WON challenges, I'll never know). Janelle was awesome at hip hop, but she couldn't do anything else if her life depended on it. All the others are forgettable.

I started watching SYTYCD last season and I remember ALL the dancers because they were all so amazing (even the ones that were kicked off early). Even Cedric who had no formal training was 10 times better than some of the clowns on SIUAD.

I think you appreciate SYTYCD more if you have formal dance training and just know if the dancers are of a higher caliber. I danced for 18 years, so I appreciate good dancing and technique when I see it. Those who prefer SIUAD have a more uneducated perspective. I'm not putting anyone down ... it's just how it is.

thank you sChil23, and you make a good point, maybe it is a matter of having dance training... and I would not even bother trying to debate with someone that thinks 'step up' is a good dance show... it's good reality show, but not because of their dancing, it's all about their drama they cry and call their mothers, blah blah, i could not stop laughing when Miguel talked all that smack about dancing and moving from his heart after he could not complete two turns, it was absurd. I think the reason they had Oscar come back is just so they could kick him off, b/c if they had not brought him back their two biggest mouths - Janelle and Miguel would have been on the chopping block... I mean how many times was Janelle almost cut, and as you said, Miguel never won a challenge... Janelle was a hot mess when she danced solo to 'man in the mirror' ...and Miguel forgot the moves... those two are comic relief, pure buffoonery ....SYTYCD actually inspires dancers to be excellent, free, creative and technically sound.... really when you think about it, to compare step it up to SYTYCD is idiotic.

Well another one bites the dust after tonight since it is the FINALE for SIUAD, lol.

I'm just waiting for the finalists to be chosen on SYTYCD so I can start watching it because I only watched the first season, and couldn't take Mary's screaming... so hopefully it will be tolerable, as the talent caliber is much higher over there. Not knocking SIUAD, but you watch one for entertainment and the other to see performance art :)

I just saw a high school recital at LACHSA in which some of the principals were better dancers than many of the dancers on both SiUaD and SYTYCD. What does that say about America's concept of good dance. I see a lot of small companies in LA who's dancers and choreographers are more original and more talented than anything that is making it on TV (Mia Michaels excluded).

reply

did you watch SYTYCD... i don't think one of these dancers on siuad could hang on this show...

reply

you cannot really compare the two shows. you have to remember that many of the dancers on SIUAD are already professional dancers (the goal of many of the contestants on SYTYCD, excepting, for instance, tidwell). the way the show is set up unfortunately made them look like they were of inferior caliber. take for instance the broadway audition. remember they only had 1.5 hrs to learn that routine. never the mind that it was 25 eight counts. and then they had to do it right then and there. so of course many of them looked terrible (even Mochi). and then they all had to learn a NEW routine THAT night. and THEN they had to perform that routine that NEXT day. and then the NEXT day they had to do something completely different.

remember the challenges were back to back (the show was shot in something like 2-3 weeks, excepting the finale), so fatigue sets in (notice that Oscar looked fine in the latin challenge, after getting some rest. the reason why you didn't see Cody do any "tricks" in the battle challenge? 'cuz he was hurt). whereas with most of the routines you see on SYTYCD, they have the whole weekend before you see the result (from what i understand, they learn the routine over friday/saturday, with filming on monday. so you have 3 nights to practice). and they have a week in between routines.

also, think back to the apache challenge. remember they only had 2 hours to CHOREOGRAPH that routine as well as learn it, and then perform it the next day. same with the modern stuff, and none of them had ever worked with complex apparatuses like that. i am not sure if some of the more precocious contestants on SYTYCD could do that.
