Dead Bodies in the House

when the troops first occupied it. The sarge said they were burned by white phosphorous, which is a horrible way to die. But wouldn't the WP have burned the whole place down to the ground too?
And as an aside, why not put men on the roof or, even better, on the hill behind it if they want to watch the road?
