As An Athiest Wannabe Jew...

Excuse my ignorance but why would I want to see this when I have already seen Mel Gibson's movie? Thank you.

You should see this one as it's quite different (I'm just a plain old agnostic, btw). I personally found it much more emotional and realistic. Even just in terms of what it covers, it starts with the Palm Sunday incident rather than Gethsemane, as Gibson's did. It's far more believable as drama too, in that all the characters, including Caiaphas, are given a believable motive for doing what they did. The violence is less visually graphic but also (oddly) more visceral.

In short, it's a 3-D version of the story rather than a 2-D and well worth a look.

I enjoyed Passion of The Christ and I should have worded my original question a bit better but I'm generally interested in this kind of theme. :-)

Thanks user-8540, I am also an agnostic, I guess. I live in the UK but I never caught it on the BBC but I will definitely have to watch it.

It's repeated on Easter Day at 2.15pm on BBC 1, and final episode (the happy ending bit I guess!) is at 7.30pm.

1. gibson's was based on the gospel of john. this on isn't really based on any one gospel.

2. this one continues past the death of jesus and begins before the garden. it gives you more a sense of jesus' ministry. gibson's has almost nothing

3. this one is not antisemitic. in fact, it seems this one was made as a response to gibson's

4. the characters of the disciples are more fully developed in this

5. there is more historical and cultural context (though some of it - the syrian governor story line - is invented).

5. for an atheist, i would recommend this one over gibson's because it tries to be a little more realistic. there is more educational merit (however small) to this one than gibson's.
