How did Foxcatcher lose money when it was met with decent reviews when It was released and is quite clearly a good film

reply

It was probably because it was an indie that sadly had a lot less mass appeal than cgi crapfests. I loved how miller shot the film and made it more subdued and restrained than I think any other filmmaker would have chosen to do. Carell and Tatum especially were just phenomenal in what they put in.

Independent films often make their profits outside of the box-office. Actors, producers, writers, etc., take less salary; deals are made with studios and other venues like Netflix after the film is made; films are four-walled, etc.

I'm not sure this movie did ultimately make the producers money, but for Sony and others like them, they like to have prestige projects in their library.

I've always found critic reviews unreliable and that their views differ from the public. They tend to favour arthouse cinema more. So the fact that it got good reviews isn't relevant to the fact that it failed at the box office.
