FOND of rice!

Lionel and his daughter ate rice as a meal-staple. Yet, rice isn't a staple of French cooking ... is it?
What do you think these characters' heritage was? I assumed they came originally from somewhere tropical, but where? Was it an Island nation, or the continent of Africa?

rice is a staple food for many people though...but yeah the father's family probably comes from a former French colony (west indies or west africa). :)
and the daughter is supposed to be half german.

Hi, not-so-simple:

Yeah, I know rice as being a staple of Asian countries, and places like The Phillipines, Indonesia, etc, too.
Still, it was never made clear where the father came from, although because he drank Rum (copiously!) I guessed Jamaica, or some such. But then again, his "accent" didn't sound Jamaican, to my ears.
Maybe, Haiti too, then?

And yeah, the daughter (Josephine) was half-German (European) wasn't she? Thanks for pointing that out.
