What was the significance of the new pressure cooker at the end of the film.

Did Lionel buy himself a new cooker to replace the one his daughter would be taking with her when she moves out?

reply

Yeah i didn't get it. We saw Jo buying it at the beginning of the movie, but when she comes home he has already bought a way better looking one for her birthday. Then we don't see the cooker Jo bought until the end of the film. Obviously JO must've been like "hey dad i also bought a rice cooker lol" but the final pressure cooker scene seemed ambiguous to me. Typical Claire Denis.

It appears to be the same cooker that josephine bought whithout knowing that her father was bringing one as a present to her the same evening...

I think the signification is indeed that josephine is going to move out with one of the two cookers.

When he went through the left stuff after she had moved out, he found the rice cooker that she bought in the beginning of the film, but hid away to not hurt her dads feelings seeing as how he had been so good as to bring home a new rice cooker himself. As for symbolism just go with it, there's a lot.

Beautiful film!

The cooker in question is definitely a rice cooker not a pressure cooker. It has a light, aluminum, removable pot which rests on a spring-loaded thermostat, and you can see the empty pot jiggle around on the thermostat. Pressure cookers have to have a heavy metal construction to contain the pressure, and they have to have a way to lock the lid on.

Through the miracle of the DVD player, it can be determined that it is the same rice cooker that Jo bought at the beginning of the film.
