When did people started to hate this????

I don't get it why? I used to like it. I wasn't a crazy fan. Actually, i never found Edward nor Jacob to be attractive. Maybe that's why!
Maybe, when you start fangirling over a movie, it ends up like this. A sh***y chick flick. What is your reason??

reply

A lot of haters don't like the vampire mythology that SM created. They don't ever sleep. The sunlight doesn't kill them. They don't have fangs. They sparkle. On and on and on and on.

A lot of the negativity stems from the Twilight Saga's absolutely spectacular success, any way it's measured. Between the movie revenues, DVDs/BluRays, and the books, sales are way above $6 billion and growing. People who didn't like the lead actors or the new take on vampires, in particular, became quite upset by its success. But keep in mind, they represent a tiny minority compared to the vast millions of people worldwide who enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) the movies and books.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

reply

Lol what? Twilight has more haters than fans stop being in denial

reply

Saw much better love stories than this and well kind of unfair from my part I most admit but all this craziness of teenagers over Robert Pattinson and a Kristen started to make dislike the saga.

reply

I think it just offends some people...look at the boards for Divergent..Hunger Games,50 Shades of Grey...there are just "haters" in the world..most of the posters have never seen any of the movies, but just like to make noise...Twilight was really a phenomenon...and will probably never happen again..it was just the right time..honestly, I really missed not having a movie last November...and so far, nothing I have seen nor read has filled the empty place..

reply

Hunger games?

reply

Are you girl? If you are so, you should feel offended yourself by this. This franchise is just the worse source of influence to young girls since "Girl Power". You know, I went into this film because everybody was reading/talking about it ("it's awesome!") like vampire romance/fiction had never been there before, so I saw it and felt it absolutely sucked, 0 in a 1-10 scale.

I seriously did not, and still do not understand the flutter towards a premise that is simply weak and already explored before (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Underworld) or at the time this film came out (True Blood) in such better ways.

And I'm sure many people out there share a particular, yet a same opinion about it, instead of gratuitous hate.

reply

This! Aaaaalll of this.

Nonsense. It is actually misogynists who hate Twilight, because they are outraged that something marketed to women has become so popular. How dare girls have something that they like?! The haters are sexist males who assume that stuff that they like (Batman, football, Transformers, etc) is superior, simply because it's approved by men.

This franchise is just the worse source of influence to young girls since "Girl Power".
No it wasn't. It sent very positive messages to girls, like waiting for marriage before having sex. It teaches girls to not let men treat them like objects who exist for male sexual gratification. Edward is also a good example to men on how to treat a woman. IRL men feel entitled to sex and treat women like whores; in Twilight, men treat women like ladies and wouldn't dream of expecting sex from a female who was not his wife. In Twilight, men fall in love with women; IRL, men just use women for sex. Is it any wonder that women prefer Edward and Jacob to real life men?

I seriously did not, and still do not understand the flutter towards a premise that is simply weak and already explored before (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Underworld) or at the time this film came out (True Blood) in such better ways.
None of these were romantic like Twilight; also, the characters in these movies are sociopaths. The examples you have cited are about slutty vampires who go around murdering people and having promiscuous sex.

Well, I don't know. Maybe all the hate has to do with the fact that
-the series is beyond stupid
-Edward is a creepy stalker who wants to EAT his "true love"
-Bella is the stupidest protagonist to ever grace literature

So women who have sex before marriage are whores? Or are just being used by their sexual partners? But woman who have sex after being married are totally having the "purest" sex in the universe, right?

Edward is also a good example to men on how to treat a woman.

Like stalking her whenever she leaves his sight? Like climbing through her window and watching her sleep? Like wrecking her car when they have a fight? Like constantly fighting to urge to want to KILL her? Yeah, that totally sounds like the ideal relationship.

For the sake of my sanity, I really want to believe you're a troll.

reply

-the series is beyond stupid
From a male perspective. You are operating under the sexist assumption that male preferences are the correct ones, simply because they are male. I'm guessing that you are male yourself, and if you aren't, you're probably one of those chicks who pretend to like sports and stuff so that your husband and male friends will think that you're cool.

-Edward is a creepy stalker
He isn't creepy. If he was average looking, it would be creepy, but since he's hot, it's awesome. Every woman's fantasy!

who wants to EAT his "true love"
He's a vampire; he's biologically programmed to want to eat people, especially his singer. That's not his fault. It would be his fault if he acted on it, but he didn't.

-Bella is the stupidest protagonist to ever grace literature
Admittedly she is kind of stupid, but she's no more stupid than any other fictional character.

So women who have sex before marriage are whores?
Depends. If it's within the confines of monogamy, no, but if it's just random dudes, by definition she is. Sex is morally acceptable only in the romantic context.

Or are just being used by their sexual partners?
If he doesn't love her but has sex with her anyway, by definition he's using her. He is utilizing her orifice to release his semen into.

But woman who have sex after being married are totally having the "purest" sex in the universe, right?
Yes. Sex is morally acceptable only within the confines of a monogamous relationship between two people who love each other; preferably marriage. People who have sex with people whom they don't love are sluts. Miss Meyer sets a good example for her readers by not allowing her characters to be sexually promiscuous.

Like stalking her whenever she leaves his sight? Like climbing through her window and watching her sleep?
Oh noez, Bella got stalked by a hot dude! I'm sure she'll be traumatized for life!

Like wrecking her car when they have a fight?
Silly, he did that to stop her from seeing his romantic rival.

Like constantly fighting to urge to want to KILL her?
That's not his fault; it's biology.

For the sake of my sanity, I really want to believe you're a troll.
Because of course no-one can disagree with you without being a troll.

reply

No, I'm not. I'm operating under the assumptions that stupid movies are, in fact, stupid. Is it so hard for you to imagine that a woman might genuinely dislike Twilight? Not because she's trying to look "cool" in front of men, but because she's an individual with her own preferences about movies/books?

On a totally unrelated note, where is this bitterness coming from? You're assuming that ALL men must enjoy sports and ALL women must hate them. Honestly, I don't even know why I'm bothering to respond to someone who clearly has such a black and white view of genders.

-Edward is a creepy stalker
He isn't creepy. If he was average looking, it would be creepy, but since he's hot, it's awesome. Every woman's fantasy!

So you admit that if he looked like a 104 year old man, you'd be creeped out? I think I speak for the majority of sensible women here when I say it would NOT be my fantasy to be stalked by a guy, regardless of what he looked like. It's creepy, unnerving, and definitely warranting of a restraining order.

who wants to EAT his "true love"
He's a vampire; he's biologically programmed to want to eat people, especially his singer. That's not his fault. It would be his fault if he acted on it, but he didn't.

Is the justification women in abusive relationships give for why they are still with their crazy boyfriends? It's sweet that he told me about his urges to bash my head against the table and kill me, but he didn't. Must be true love!

-Bella is the stupidest protagonist to ever grace literature
Admittedly she is kind of stupid, but she's no more stupid than any other fictional character.

She's definitely below average in the intelligence department.

So women who have sex before marriage are whores?
Depends. If it's within the confines of monogamy, no, but if it's just random dudes, by definition she is. Sex is morally acceptable only in the romantic context.

Why? Why does it bother you that some woman choose to have multiple sexual partners? Why is it any of your business to condemn their life choices? Does it make you a better person?

Or are just being used by their sexual partners?
If he doesn't love her but has sex with her anyway, by definition he's using her. He is utilizing her orifice to release his semen into.

Have you considered a career in writing erotica? Don't.

Also, why do you keep describing sex as if it's something that HAPPENS to the woman?

But woman who have sex after being married are totally having the "purest" sex in the universe, right?
Yes. Sex is morally acceptable only within the confines of a monogamous relationship between two people who love each other; preferably marriage. People who have sex with people whom they don't love are sluts. Miss Meyer sets a good example for her readers by not allowing her characters to be sexually promiscuous.

This paragraph contained so much stupid and I can't even figure out how to process it.

Like stalking her whenever she leaves his sight? Like climbing through her window and watching her sleep?
Oh noez, Bella got stalked by a hot dude! I'm sure she'll be traumatized for life!

I would be. It's a little disturbing you wouldn't be creeped out if some dude you barely knew decided to watch you sleep. If he ends up hacking you with an axe later, you'll know it will be because of your own stupidity.

Like wrecking her car when they have a fight?
Silly, he did that to stop her from seeing his romantic rival.

But...he still wrecked her car. This reason still doesn't justify it over the other one. And why is it okay for Edward to control who Bella decides she wants to see? He's a controlling, possessive, stalking little *beep*

Like constantly fighting to urge to want to KILL her?
That's not his fault; it's biology.

Yeah, I suppose you'd defend rapists and abusers with the same logic. #fail

No, I just meant that someone with such crazy ass opinions must be trolling. Or possibly a Republican.

Why would she? It's so romantic.

On a totally unrelated note, where is this bitterness coming from? You're assuming that ALL men must enjoy sports and ALL women must hate them.
Not all, just 99% of them.

So you admit that if he looked like a 104 year old man, you'd be creeped out?
Of course I would, but he doesn't.

I think I speak for the majority of sensible women here when I say it would NOT be my fantasy to be stalked by a guy, regardless of what he looked like. It's creepy, unnerving, and definitely warranting of a restraining order.
Oh please. Men say stuff like this about attractive women all the time "Oh I wish some hot chick would stalk me!", and nobody cares. Yet when a woman says it about a man, everyone gets butthurt about it.

Is the justification women in abusive relationships give for why they are still with their crazy boyfriends? It's sweet that he told me about his urges to bash my head against the table and kill me, but he didn't. Must be true love!
That is a poor analogy. Abusing one's partner is a choice. Vampires have no choice in their desire to kill and eat people; only whether or not to act on it. There is no biological urge for humans to bash other humans' heads against tables.

Why? Why does it bother you that some woman choose to have multiple sexual partners? Why is it any of your business to condemn their life choices? Does it make you a better person?
Because she's perpetuating the message that women only exist to sexually serve men-they're not human beings, but just a hole to plow. Her choices don't just affect her-by behaving like a slut, she's harming all women via collective objectification. This behavior gives men a sense of entitlement to sex with women who are not their wives. She's making it harder for women to be taken seriously and treated like equals-how will men regard them as equals if they regard them as whores?

It also makes it harder for good girls to find a husband, since men today know they can get sex without getting married. This wasn't the case back in the day-a girl could have a fiance lined up for her before she graduated college, if not high school. Now she's lucky if she's married before she's thirty. Even if she does find a husband, it's highly unlikely that he'll be a virgin. He won't be pure for her because of all these other women before her. Yes, he's at fault too for having sex, but he wouldn't have had the opportunity to have sex had the female not given it to him. Female promiscuity enables male promiscuity, since sex has two participants.

Have you considered a career in writing erotica? Don't.
Why? More people should write erotica about monogamous, loving couples instead of random skanks.

Also, why do you keep describing sex as if it's something that HAPPENS to the woman?
Because it is. She's the one being penetrated, isn't she?

This paragraph contained so much stupid and I can't even figure out how to process it.
What did I say that was factually incorrect?

I would be. It's a little disturbing you wouldn't be creeped out if some dude you barely knew decided to watch you sleep. If he ends up hacking you with an axe later, you'll know it will be because of your own stupidity.
See #4.

But...he still wrecked her car. This reason still doesn't justify it over the other one. And why is it okay for Edward to control who Bella decides she wants to see? He's a controlling, possessive, stalking little *beep*
Well, he was also concerned for her safety. Yes, his concerns turned out to be unfounded, but he believed at the time that Jake might hurt her.

Yeah, I suppose you'd defend rapists and abusers with the same logic. #fail
If he acts on it, no. But he cannot be held responsible for simply having a biological urge to do something. We are only responsible for our actions, not our nature.

No, I just meant that someone with such crazy ass opinions must be trolling. Or possibly a Republican.
What "crazy ass opinions"? That men should respect women and women should respect themselves? That people shouldn't jump into bed with the first person they see?

Is officerhaughty even aware that fallingskywards' avatar is Hermione Granger?

reply

Wow...you just kept digging yourself deeper and deeper in your idiotic thought process. Whether or not Edward is "hot" (the fact that you think this already makes me not want to believe anything you say) it still doesn't make him any less creepy that he's hanging out in her bedroom watching her as she sleeps. Maybe in the movies this is considered romantic..not sure why..but in real life it would be creepy as hell. I guess if the guy was with you in your bedroom and you knew he was there it would a little less weird..still kind of creepy in my opinion..but at least then you knew of his presence..not stalking her while she is basically unconscious. I can't even begin to discuss the whole "women that have sex when they are not in relationships are sluts" comment. My god..what year are we living in? I really hope there are not many other women who think this way. This is precisely my problem with this movie..is that it is not realistic. It's the way girls that have no life experience or understand complex relationships see being with someone. That your life after meeting a guy basically a week ago is now all about that person and you are in love and you should lose all kind of reason and only be dedicated to that person. It's just even more disturbing that these are teenagers we are talking about..teenagers that probably have never been in a serious relationship..and now they will stay together till the end? Jesus..what a terrifying concept and completely unrealistic. I can't even continue to talk about why this film should not be taken seriously..but I had to respond because your post was just ridiculous.

Oh honey, no.

Divergent is a good series. Hunger Games is good. They aren't epic, but they are solid.

50 Shades is a shoddy ripoff of Twilight. I can't believe I'm saying this but it is WORSE than Twilight. It, too, is full of rape culture perpetuation (main love interest even RAPES female protagonist because she didn't call him?! AFTER BREAKING INTO HER HOUSE TO DO SO, more or less), redundancies, cliche lines (no straight man says "Laters babe" in a serious and habitual manner), and product placement.

You need to read more if Twilight is the ONLY thing you could consider as a phenomenon. Go read some Austen, Bronte, Dickens, hell, even Gregory Maguire, and then get back to me about that void…I'm pretty sure it's in your brain. It is BEGGING FOR LEGITIMATE STIMULATION!

reply

50 Shades is a shoddy ripoff of Twilight.
No it isn't. The story has nothing to do with Twilight. The only thing that they had in common was that the characters had the same names, being a Twilight fanfiction, but she changed their names to avoid copyright infringement/plagiarism so now they don't even have that.

I can't believe I'm saying this but it is WORSE than Twilight. It, too, is full of rape culture perpetuation (main love interest even RAPES female protagonist because she didn't call him?! AFTER BREAKING INTO HER HOUSE TO DO SO, more or less)
Fifty Shades was a stupid book, but to claim that he "raped" her is factually incorrect. A man and a woman having sex isn't rape, it's just people having sex. Ana and Christian merely participated in the natural reproductive process.

And what do you mean, "it, too"? There was never any rape culture stuff in Twilight; in fact, there was no premarital sex at all, consensual or otherwise. Most of the vampires and werewolves were/will be virgins until marriage.

no straight man says "Laters babe" in a serious and habitual manner
Evidently, this guy just did

reply

YOU NAMED ALL THE WORST FILMS OF THE ERA...

reply

The books have been criticized since release. Same with the films.

reply

I have to disagree with you regarding the books, yonskii, at least the first and second books in the series. The first novel in the Twilight series received favorable reviews as did the second to a lesser degree. The other books received much more scrutiny, especially after the mega-success of the film adaptations. The novels and movies began to merge in the minds of many people. A number of people who ignored the first books came out of the woodwork to rip apart every aspect of Meyer's work. I've seen numerous instances where the novel has been critiqued by those who never read it.

reply

I was a fan of the books but as soon as the first movie came out all the hype surrounding it completely turned me off. I just moved on to other books.
