I asked the same question for the older version, on that movies board some snooty aussie told me I was spoiled by hollywood and don't understand the creepiness behind all that..
I told him to go put some shrimp on the barbie and come back with a real response.
Nice reply..... There was no reason (for the other person)to be rude to you for asking a question. As a fellow Aussie I appologise on his/her behalf.
As for the other family I think yeah their cause of demise was unimportant but rather the tension it created, like the Dugong how the hell did it get to where it did. If we actually saw it move it would lessen the effect they were trying to create and probably look quite humorous

I think it was implied that the same fate had happened to them. More or less. At the start of the movie, after he had hit the kangaroo a red looking vehicle had run over it too. The van while sitting their on the beach of the other people, was a reddish color, with a whit-top. It may have been that they had disrespected the nature as well. Littering the beach along with it.
shareIt's the same vehicle. They had a sticker in the back window of the van that read "Magic Happens." See? Foreshadowing!
