Good story line but....

The movie has good story line but.... IMHO, it is tainted by way too many comic scenes that went overboard. The director seems desperate, trying too hard to force the movie to look funny but ending up making those scenes stiff, unnatural, forced. Totally unnecessary, in my opinion. Examples? Those three co-workers of the wife taking turn sniffing the head? An old locker thief dressed up in superhero costume jumping down from a multi-storey floor right onto a parked motorcycle? A balding old shop-owner chasing a couple of strangers and assaulting them (with a flying kick) just because they asked him how he made ends meet? They may not be as bad as those in the classic Abbot-and-Costello pie-throwing face-slapping slapsticks, but come on.... it's a 2007 production

I completely agree. I really don't understand why this movie had such a high rating. It was way too corny for me to enjoy. The synopsis and cover don't suggest a comical, zany movie either. But I've noticed that Japanese tend to thrive on the quirky in their entertainment choices so I'm guessing I'm just not part of the intended audience. If they like it, they can have it.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

I saw the film with my wife. My wife is Japanese. Neither of us thought it was very good. The story was pretty silly, I thought.

That's OK ... Japanese humor is almost as inscrutable to us as German quips are. One of the major joys of watching foreign movies is to see & acknowledge the cultural differences. (It is said that philosophers are never appreciated in their own country. Perhaps comedians are only in their own.)
