There's an old, out-of-print vhs called "Here Are The Young Men". It's got a bunch of concert and TV stuff. Great compilation. You can find it on ebay or used through Amazon. If you're capable of downloading torrents, I'm sure it's on the net somewhere for download. Good luck!

Yeah that footage is barely audible and worthless, seen it.

Yes I have the footage on a faulty DVDR it suffers from digital clicks unfortunately, the video it comes from was in bad condition anyway and apparentely it's an upgrade, I'd love to get my hands on the master and make a good transfer.

The problem is the majority of the HERE ARE THE YOUNG MEN footage was shot on a cheap consumer-brand video camera with the in-camera mic picking up the sound; it never looked or sounded good. Some of the 8mm film material is a bit better and is used to good effect in the documentary.

It's sad that the producers apparently didn't have access to the original footage of the "Love Will Tear Us Apart" video (does it even exist anymore?), but I was happy they chose to present it all in black-and-white (instead of that annoying red posterization effect) and re-synched the visuals to match the playback.

It's very frustrating how the footage of JD has been treated. Firstly, back in the Seventies TV producers didn't think we could sit and watch a band playing on the TV so, for instance, Shadowplay on Granada Reports has that awful traffic film superimposed over the band. Then the clips from Something Else are (to my eyes) really badly filmed - I find myself screaming for a glimpse of Curtis and his moves but the camera lingers on the statuesque Sumner picking at his guitar, or Morris on the drums for an inordinate length. I'm all for seeing all the players, but the singer is the focus- or why not a few wide shots of the whole band?

The "unofficial" stuff - Bowden Vale, the Apollo etc - is understandably technically bad as it's done by amateurs but it does at least show the whole band. The long intro to Dead Souls at the Apollo is amazing - the camera stays on Curtis limbering up at the microphone even though he doesn't sing until about three minutes in.

As I say, very frustrating, but also very sad as we'll never see their like again.
