Laura got stopped so early on after she was first bitten that she never really had a chance to change fully into a vampire. Then after 100 years in the ground she was so week she took some time to come back to full strength. But she had never really fed, so it wasn't until she saw the blood on Julian that it really overcame her and she fed for the first time. Then everything clicks, and she becomes a full-up vampire.
The vampires are regular vampires, but to Julian, they are an evil influence. Not demonic, but not good either. He says she fell in love with "the devil", but it isn't literal. Think of it as a more Victorian, "Hammer Horror" definition.
I will be the first to admit that none of this is clearly defined, because I didn't want to lay it all out with notes and arrows, but it's funny how some people get every single bit of it and then read even more into it that even I intended, and some people don't get a single thing throughout the entire film. I just appreciate the fact that you are discussing it and not dissing it outright.
As for the teeth, I designed those and I stand by them. I think they're interesting and different, and that's hard to find, with so many vampires already out there. Once again, people seem to love or hate the teeth.
