What caused people to get faint whenever they tried to leave?

it was explained in the film similar to going diving: you can descend pretty fast into deep waters, becoming acclimatized (walking into the aging affect arena), but surfacing quickly from a dive is bad news because you have to slowly fix your blood bubbles with "decompression". so, trying to leave the area fast, just walking was too much pressure on the cells that were now very fast aging, and the body responded with a shock and blackout instead, as self preservation.
