Did you have other theories about what the twist would be? (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

So, if you already saw this, and hadn't read the book before, or even know that it was based on an already existing story (I'm clueless, I guess), did you have any theories on what the twist was actually going to be?

I thought in early scenes (when she was fighting with her husband in the hotel room while the kids were huddled together in the next room) that possibly it was all going to be tied to her "medical issue" and that maybe it going to all turn out to be a dream or some medically induced halluciation as she already lie dying in the hospital.

I had another theory later on when it was getting dark and they showed the fire, but for the life of me can't remember what that theory was. I think it might have had something to do with the water actually.

So, did you have any other theories? If so, what were they and why?

I'm assuming you've seen the movie... in which case the question is could one have come up wtih a more ignorant ending than the one they used. Frankly I think they came up with the most implausible crap ending one could have imagined, it was even worse than the classic "oil companies are behind the murder to keep a new invention from being made" that used to be in bad movies in the 70's.

I didn't say I liked the explanation. Just wondered if other people thought it was going to turn out to be something different than it was.

The ending was the last thing I would have ever expected because it was so ridiculous. I can't believe anyone will like the ending and not just feel like the director fucked them out of 2 hours of their life for nothing.

I thought it was going to be the ocean water or something they eat or drink that would make them become old. I also thought they would escape through climbing or walking slowly through the ravine.

The scene in the trailer with the aged man bleeding made me form this theory: a carnivorous parasite infected them and caused them to age until their flesh became 'ripe' enough for the parasite's taste.

reply

That actually would have been pretty cool.

I do get what you are asking here...

Got to say, I had a couple ideas for where it was headed, but now I can't remember them. I'm getting old.

:D :) :(

No, really, I am old and after the ending, I sort of forgot where I was thinking it was headed. I figured out it was an experiment, from the guy on the hill, and something about medical issues, but that was about it.
Might have thought it was aliens trying to FIX people's medical issues, but not getting it quite right,
or maybe the healthy people on the island cleansing the gene pool, so to speak. maybe finding the strongest people to breed or send to space, stuff like that

I thought that the Island needed a sacrifice. And maybe sacrificing a few tourists, helped certain people stay young, something like that. Or maybe it made the Island thrive for tourism, making people rich. I know that sounds stupid. I had another thought on it too, but I've forgotten also.

I thought they were sucking the youth from these people to regenerate some ultra rich ancient person. I wish that was the ending because we ended up with a very implausible one. What medical company not only is experimenting on humans but in a 1000x fast forward to see results quicker? This is worse than crazy Nazi Doctor Mengela.

reply

I haven't seen it yet but I heard what the "twist" is and honestly that's what's turned me off from seeing it.

reply

I thought the reveal was going to be perhaps the children secretly hated their parents and wanted to see them die off quickly. They were given this opportunity somehow. Plus they'd be adults and independent in a short time.

I thought it could have been a simulation for them to understand how their illnesses would effect them as they age. Like maybe they would all wake up and be able to make better decisions about their health/lives, i.e. the tumor removal being presented as this grand decision. Also the couple in the end not even remembering why they were fighting and just choosing to love and be content with each other in their last moments. Honestly I would have loved to see that as an ending instead.

I also thought the rapper had more knowledge of the place than everyone else and he would be the key to figuring it out. I wish he wouldn't have gotten killed off so fast because his character was interesting.
