Only 6.9??? Seriously???

Weird. I was expecting 8-10 for this one.

I mean, I know it's not Inception, but still.... ;-)

How does this film rate with Herzog fans? Curious.

I thought it was utterly brilliant.

It rates well with Herzog fans. Albeit maybe not so well with "this is the idea I'm having of Herzog and gonna stick to it" fans of themselves.

Original take on an otherwise not so original plot, good acting, wonderful toying around with cliches and expectations, lovely humor. Liked the film a lot, also because it worked great on the mere entertainment level.

Well its thanks to this picture that I started looking out his other films, and from what I've watched so far Bad Lieutenant is very Herzog. He used similar dark, offbeat humour even in Aquirre didn't he?

'Oh, these longer arrows are becoming fashionable...' then dies. And that wasn't even a comedy.

Of course it's Herzog. It's just not that extreme in it's physical effort, like dragging staff and equipment through mosquito infested jungles on tiny budgets.

And with regard to Aguirre, I'd say the latter is more drama. Port of Call rather plays on Hollywood stereotypes and American lifestyle, in an easy way. Much easier still than My Son, My Son ...

I loved the film--gave it a 10. I am a big Herzog fan, and I am also a big fan of Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes. I also like Jennifer Coolidge, Val Kilmer and Brad Dourif enough that I'll see a film just because they're in it.

BUT, you have to remember out of ALL the films ever made--for the past 130 years, from every country, just a bit more than 250 of them even have an 8/10 here. Only THREE of them have more than an 8.9. So basically forget about ANY film receiving a 9 or more here, and the chances that anything would get over a 7.9 are very, very slim.

So when you look at the ratings on IMDb, you have to keep in mind that the ceiling, the highest rating you could expect something to have, is basically a 7.9, not a 10. Nothing has a 10 on the site if more than a couple people voted on it. A 6.9 isn't at all bad here. That's actually quite a bit higher than I expected this to be rated, especially since it's a sequel or remake--depending on how you want to look at it--of a film that has many fans, especially because its director (Abel Ferrara) and star (Harvey Keitel) have many fans (including me for Keitel, less so Ferrara), and many people basically hate Nicolas Cage. There's usually an automatic sequel/remake downrating when so much about the new film is different, and there's easily a number of folks who downrate a film just because Cage is in it.

Eventually, I believe that people will realize how funny and original this movie is. It's rating should go up (and I'm a big Herzog fan).

It's not bias. Nic Cage genuinely sucks as an actor.

You just don't like his face.

I liked the original with Keitel, he was a great dirty rotten cop, a true BAD lieutenant.

This is one of those films that has greatly grown on me. I really enjoyed it the first time I saw it on DVD. But after several rewatches, at least 4 or 5 in as many months, I consider it my favorite Herzog film. I really love this movie.
