Why Cypress Bay?

Is the school they go to very popular, because before
the show aired I had never heard of it.

Is it a big school?

reply

The biggest in America, as a matter of fact, at well over 5,000 students. Also, this was probably the first school to agree to let MTV in.

Yeah, it's obscenely huge.

I just graduated from Cypress last year, with the greatest amount of students to graduate from a high school in the nation. and besides just having a lot of awards. All of Cypress Bay sports and clubs have won numerous awards. I was always around the filming of the show, up till going to the premier airing at the movie theater. I also have know Amanda since middle school, and yes, just like every reality show, MTV made it look like more drama then it actually was. But the best part was seeing my friend crying on the show... Remember they showed the blond hair girl balling her eyes out cause she didn't get into the class? Best part of the show

It's the biggest school newspaper in the country.

reply

Did they say that in show? I realize it's the biggest school in the country but I doubt it's the biggest school newspaper in the country. My high school was smaller than this (2000+) and the paper was around the same size. What, it was like 70 kids or so? It's not that big.

I live near it and a friend of mine goes there, it has 5,500 students the biggest in the country. 10 other schools were going to be chosen but all said no.

reply

There have been other threads about this, but they asked my high school and a few others in similar areas (I lived outside Washington DC in Maryland) to participate and we said no right away. I guess some students felt it would be an invasion of privacy. Some thought it would be kind of cool. I think our segment (if they had chosen to do multiple schools) would have been pretty boring. There was a fair amount of drama on our paper, but it was nothing compared to Cypress Bay and it all came out at the end/beginning of the year when positions were announced. Other than that everyone was just obsessed with getting into college. Our paper was way way way better too and had been around a good 6 decades longer, but who's counting.

I know several people who were on the Circuit & according to them, MTV basically amplified the drama on their staff. They got a lot more accomplished than it looked like, and people liked Amanda way more than The Paper actually showed.

reply

"Welcome to Cypress Bay High School - home of the award-winning newspaper The Circuit." - of mtv.ca

and that is why it was chosen

reply

Yeah The Circuit has won numerous awards and Cypress Bay is the largest school in the country. I wouldn't say The Circuit is the largest newspaper in the country, but I think it was chosen because of the awards it has won

There are a lot of newspapers that win a lot of awards. The awards obviously clued MTV in to the fact that The Circuit is a good newspaper, but the school itself was more likely picked for its size as well.

reply

Or maybe a few days of observation revealed that they were the most dramatic high-school paper available.

Do you think the show was like Laguna Beach or the Hills in that they told the cast to talk about certain things when they were filming?

I read somewhere they shot over a 1000 hours of footage so it's very well possible there was enough drama to show for four hours.

reply

It's possible. If they found that much time to bash Amanda without help, I would fear for their sanity.

reply

My guess is the scenes shot outside of school all had 'directed' conversations similar to Laguna Beach. I can't imagine they would waste that much time talking about Amanda, and I can't imagine the film crew shot footage of the whole time they were hanging out.

reply

That hair salon scene in the last episode had to be directed. Dan even had the "concerned friend face." The scene in Trevor's backyard in the second episode looked pretty set up as well.

But wouldn't it be hellacious if they did talk about Amanda that much? They'll probably be stewing over her when they're old and decrepit.

First of all, most high school publications and clubs and teams have a lot of drama. Hello, it's high school? Secondly, people I know who were actually on that staff said the show left out a lot that went on... and that the drama wasn't nearly as bad.

I mean, MTV would never try to amplify any drama, would they?

reply

They would need drama to amplify first, wouldn't they? There's only so much you can squeeze out of a newspaper in which everyone gets along and gets all their work done without much complaining.

reply

I'm not saying everyone gets along or that there's no drama whatsoever. I am saying it's high school and that plenty of high school publications have drama. With MTV around, of course the drama is going to seem crazier than it is. I just think that the drama at The Circuit is no worse than that of most high school publications (or other clubs).

reply

I dunno, I've seen a lot of newspaper kids from other schools say that they aren't nearly as dramatic/whiny as this bunch.

A LOT of the kids got kicked out of Cypress this year lol, apparently it was mainly sophomores. But from what I've heard (I didn't go to Cypress but all of my best friends did) MTV provoked almost everything you saw. At their homecoming game MTV pushed their way to the front row and kicked out a whole group of kids from their seats, including my friend dating one of the football players. I've met the girl, Amanda, that everyone says was a huge bitch. She's not by any means. I've never watched the show because I'm not really an MTV person but my friend told me that on the last episode they had the school band play 'All You Need Is Love' or something and they had to pull all of the kids out of class and were really disruptive because, seriously, schools just don't DO that. But whatever, my friend's boyfriend showed me the new edition of the Circuit and it was really, honestly, well done.
