Is Eastern Europe actually like Transylvania from the Hammer films?

This movie was filmed in Sofia in Bulgaria, google images of this city and you'll see that they didn't exactly show the architectural highlights!

Obviously for the purposes of this film it was necessary to show the small village (Ivanovo or something) had no communications etc, however I question the portrayal of the town and it's people as though they're still in the 19th century. Is this a partial remake of Brigadoon?

A more realistic representation of Eastern Europe would have been welcome.

I live in Bulgaria and I can asure you it has nothing to do with the Hammer horros :) Actually if you want to get some neat Gothic architecture you go to Central Europe. If you have the money you shoot in Prague. If you don't have the money you come and shoot low-budget B-movie crap for Sci-Fi Channel.

I have lived, traveled, and worked all through eastern and southeastern Europe and can say w/out hesitation that it's portrayal in Sci Fi movies is nothing like reality.

I think they dropped the ball really (I don't suppose they care). They could have put some of the amazing architecture to good use.

I can't see why having a low budget means the film should be poorly executed and unimaginative. The obvious film to cite being El Mariachi.
