Allowing a friend to listen to your sigur ros music (Reactions)

Ok well here in Canada alot of people dont even know who Sigur Ros are. It sometimes sucks because I would love to have a couple friends that I could discuss there music with. Well recently I was at work and I had the new Heima / Hvarf cd on my desk. She asks what is that and I explain to her that its Sigur Ros and she asks if she can listen to it........I tell her you need to be very experimental with your music if she wants to listen to this. Its so far from what all these people listen to around here that it actually probably scares them......So I let her listen to it and I put the song (I gaer) on first and she quickly doesnt like that the songs are very slow. I try to explain to her that they are made to build up. So I let her listen to Salka after and she just said its to weird because they dont even speak english lol. People around here disregard any music that doesnt envolve singing as just weird and it sucks.......it pisses me off lol. What have your reactions been when it came to introducing people to Sigur Ros?

reply

yeah i get the same reactions as you did
people overrate the lyrics
they don't know how to enjoy music anymore

Heima is on my Christmas list, and as soon as I get it I'm gonna watch it. I also discovered Sigur Ros through Vanilla Sky and went to HMV to look for the album. The clerk obviously had great taste because he told me it (Agaetis Byrjun) was a spectacular album. Years later I have ( ) and Takk, and have seen them in concert once (for the Takk tour). I'm in Montreal, Canada, and a good deal of people know who they are, although a strong majority wouldn't know them because they listen to Much Music and mainstream radio. But I digress...

My current girlfriend knows the band well and has seen them twice, so obviously we both rave about the band, and rightfully so. A few of my friends enjoy the band too (one of which was with me watching Vanilla Sky), but others are into hardcore metal genres so I don't even try. One 'victory' if you want to call it that was with my ex. This was the type of person that listens to Bon Jovi (I know, terrible, lol), but I listened to ( ) with her and she said, quite honestly and positively: ''Pretty for something with (almost) no lyrics''. It may not seen like much, but she seemed genuine enough. I had my mom listen to ( ) as well, and while she found it kinda out there, she didn't hate it. But then my mom is pretty open-minded. And she loved Staralfur.

If any of you fans read this and want to talk Sigur Ros with a fellow fan, feel free to send me a private message!

Heh, pretty much everyone I know loves Sigur Ros, and I'm Canadian also. But to be fair, I kinda introduced everyone... having seen the video of Untitled 1 on Much Music a while back and searching for it for a good 2 years... but I now don't know anyone who doesnt at least know of them.

Movies on IMDB are not overrated, you're just of the minority that doesn't bloody LIKE THEM!

i first heard Sigur Ros watching The Life Aquatic (staralfur) --that was it, i fell in love. the only other person i know who listens to them is my boyfriend, who also knew them from a movie (either life aquatic or vanilla sky). I can't wait to see Heima and I have a secret wish to visit Iceland someday.

So far I've only met one person who's liked Sigur Ros. I gifted him Agaetis Byrjun for his birthday and he didn't seem happy since he preferred Takk.. and ( ) over this one. However in my wisdom I felt that AB would be a better choice. Needless to say that a few months later he was raving about it.

However, that one's an exception he also had a good taste in movies. The rest of the folks have hated every second of it. However there was indeed one person who asked me about the music that I was playing once, than later I realised that he was trying to hit on me at that time, so his comments were not genuine.

I live in the middle in Missouri, in the USA, and it seems here for whatever odd reason, we have a ton of punks and emo kids who have(IMO) horrible tastes in music but all think its cool to like Sigur Ros...I just don't understand it...its like its a fad...

I just know that the moment I heard Sigur Ros for the first time, I was intrigued and have sense come to listen to various other Icelandic bands, Mum, Amiina, Seabear, Mugison...

I was pretty much hooked when I first saw the trailer for Children of Men. I've showed them to a lot of my friends, and everyone seems to like them...which is rare

I have pretty similar reactions when I show my friends. They all kind of make faces, say it sounds "pretty", but that they don't see what's so great about it. However, I usually just burn them a CD and leave it with them... then I'll get a phonecall or text or e-mail anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks later with them ranting and raving about how I was right when I said Sigur Rós are angels in human form. :)

reply

Wow, that story of yours is extreme. Depressing in some way...
I couldn't stand "friends" who react in such a stupid and childish way. Don't even wanna think of that.

Sigur Rós are divine, I wouldn't show their music to any i**ot (I'm NOT talking here about your friend, please don't get me wrong!) to ruin it.

Thankfully most of my friends here in Seattle are pretty open minded when it comes to music. I read about () first and asked a musico friend of mine, he hooked me up.
Seems like everybody I know who knows Sigur Ros is into them.

And Will-Hare-89 I know what you mean about "angels in human form". I describe their music to people who haven't heard them yet as "what music must sound like in Heaven".

I'm from Seattle too and I can pretty much get anyone to try Sigur Ros out. Most of my friends are definitely into Sigur Ros. Once in a while I'll find people that just don't understand it. Those people are usually less musical people in general and more of the science and math side of the brain oriented. No room for creativity and experimentation with arts.

Hehe, I get what you mean about 'angels in human form' and 'what music must sound like in heaven' too. That's one of the ways I like to describe their music, along with 'otherworldly'. In that sense, I think the angel/alien/foetus artwork from Agaetis Byrjun perfectly illustrates their music.

I recently introduced a 61 year old friend to them with Heima, and he really took to it. In fact, he recently underwent risky vascular surgery, and I was the one who took him to the hospital to have it done. He was pretty sure he was not going to survive the surgery, and even had last rites the night before. Anyway, when I showed up to pick him up and take him in for the procedure, he was listening to Agaetis Byrjun. Potentially the last thing he would ever hear, and that is what he chose to listen to. He's home and doing well now, having gone home three days ago... I hope to play disc two for him this weekend.

I think anyone who claims to like music, MUST like Sigur Rós. It's just... you can't do not like this unique music.

The only people i know that don't like it, are people that is really closed with just one type of music, like, only people that listen to black metal, or punk, etc. But, they just CAN'T say Sigur Rós is a bad or horrible band... they just don't like it.

But most of people that like music and you know you can introduce to them Sigur Rós, they like them immediately, or at least like a few songs when they think the band is "too slow" or something like that.

reply

Well I was shown through a friend. Well actually it is the girl whom I'm in love with, yet she doesn't know it yet. Anyways, this band has changed me. Music plays such a big part in my life. I am a screenwriter/filmmaker and this band has done nothing but inspire me.

Yet at the same time I cry everytime I watch Heima. I was introduced to them through this film and I was stunned at how beautiful it was. Yet now when I watch the film it reminds me of my troubles. But that's what makes Sigur Ros so special. They can touch you right down to the core.

I love them.
