So is any of this to be believed?

The combination of vintage footage with bits that were filmed in a vintage style made it difficult to untangle what, if any, of these events actually happened. Especially when you consider that his mother in the film is not played by his real mother, for a start.

The bits I believed...

The high rate of sleepwalking (why not, though I'm not sure who keeps the stats on this type of thing).

The iron bridge which was intended for the Nile ended up spanning the railway yard.

The workers strike (it's on wikipedia, though I'm not sure what role the girls school played in it).

The horses trapped in the ice (extremely well done if it was faked for the cameras).

And it's obvious the man is obsessed with hockey and was sad to see the team and arena dismantled.

The bits I didn't believe...

Everyone is allowed to keep the keys to their previous residences.

Squatters are confined to the tops of buildings and are living in shelters between from the scraps they could scavenge from an amusement park flattened in a big gay bison stampede.

The capitol building was built by Masons and was the scene of a seance where the medium danced when in a trance.

The man pageants (would've been nice though).

Anybody out there with the local knowledge who'd care to comment?

I live in Winnipeg and know for sure that the Legislative Building/Mason thing is true.
Also I read that the horse thing is true.
Weird city... and the If Day thing is true as well.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeird City. I appreciate it so much more now.

I think that all of it is true in one way or another. Dreams and memories can be true. People can believe in things very resolutely even if they are not historical facts. The best filmmakers always blend reality and dreams. The childhood memories we all carry with us are full of inaccuracies, but they are still believed long into adult life. Dreams can be thought of as memories that were never quite made clear in the mind, despite their power to be felt deeply, and despite their dual nature of both lingering and fading.

I loved this film because it is so dreamy and so full of memories.

Something is true if it is in accordance with reality. If you start to think some of the inaccurate memories and dreams are true in some way or another, before you are totally a sleepwalker, take a break from the Madden films for a bit and go for a drive or something. Then you can watch more.

How about that show, that couldn't be real. Hilarious but not 100 percent true.

Much of the movies questionable incidents are not real. Come on. Where is your sense of humor?

What was it "the ledge stander"?

reply

Yea, it was on after Beachcombers and before the Raccoons every day on CBC.

Thanks for the link, that was interesting.

I did have the urge to fact-check after watching, but then I thought in the end it doesn't matter too much what is true and what isn't. The film is more a cinematic poem than a documentary. Loved it.

What I would like to know though, is wether people who are from Winnipeg think he captured something true here (in the way that there can be truth to poetry) that they relate to.

link requires me to log in? was it always like that?

reply

Not when I read it.

Practically everything Maddin filmed in this movie are true, from the historical events (all of which were true or backed up by some historical evidence) to his family history. Although those are the parts that are a little iffy.

reply

The If Day thing is definitely true. I've read articles about it before.

"And it's obvious the man is obsessed with hockey and was sad to see the team and arena dismantled"

Well he should be happy they have a team again since this was made. They still suck though.

And the Ledge Stander is second only to Hockey Night in Canada for longest running show in Canada (or I may be joking).

I don't believe the keys to old houses thing or that you have to let sleepwalkers stay. And if there were homeless villages on the rooftops on I am sure Vice would be making a doc on them. I would question most of the facts in this and the link above is now dead. It's one of those things I don't want to know though, I like the made up version. Loved this movie too. I'm not from Winnipeg but we had a landfill hill in Ontario that we also used as a Sledding area so that would almost certainly be true.
