there are a lot of indian film blogs and sites that may help you, some written by non-indian people. My favourites include
Memsaab story
Beth loves bollywood
filmigeek,
Phillip's Fil-ums
bollywood food club

many more links and resources and lists can be found on these sites besides reviews of a great number of indian films, old and new.

Hope this helps and have fun!

yeah watch the original this movie is copied of harold and maude

TO the person who said that Jab We Met is a copy of Harold and Maude: It certainly is not, have you even seen that movie? H&M is about consummated romance between a teenager and a 60 year old woman! Sheesh people.

I am guessing that you like sort of upbeat movies, here is a list for you to check out:

Ishq Vishq- Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao (College love story)

Dil To Pagal Hai - Stars Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor

Bride and Prejudice- Aishwarya Rai, Naveen Andrews, Martin Henderson (Indian version of Pride and Prejudice, very refreshing!)

Mujhse Dosti Karoge!- Rani Mukerjee, Kareena Kapoor, Uday Chopra (Love + Internet + switching identities)

Na Tum Jaano Na Hum- Hrithik Roshan, Esha Deol, Saif Ali Khan

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge- Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, (NRI Indians on Europe vacation)

Khaai Akshar Prem Ke- Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai (Love + danger)

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai- Sharukh Khan, Rani Mukerjee, Kajol (2's company 3's a crowd)

Dhoom 2 - Abhisek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha Basu, Aishwarya Rai (action + passion)

Meere Yaar Ki Shaddi Hai- Uday Chopra, Bipasha Basu (Best Friends's wedding with twist)

Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai- Amisha Patel, Hrithik Roshan (thriller)

Veer-Zaara- Preity Zinta, Ambitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan (a classic)

Om Shanti Om- Shahrukh Khan, Deepika P (off the hook, love story, thriller)

Fanaa- Aamir Khan, Kajol (love story, thriller)

Dus- Sanjay Dutt, Abshisek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu (action)

Salaam E Ishq- John Abraham, etc (fantasstic story)

Salaam Namaste- Akshaye Kumar, Karina Kaif, Upen Patel (NRI's plight)

Check out the forums at bollywhat.com, it's specifically created for non-Indian fans of Bollywood films. I'm sure they'll have great suggestions for you. Also, I really loved Aaja Nachle and Om Shanti Om.

I think you may like Dil Chahta Hai and Jhankaar Beats.

I loved Jab We Met! I laughed so much. Especially at the "Hotel De-cent" bit!

Dil Chahta Hai was an excellent movie too! Anyone who has watched it, I laughed my head off at the "fat opera" bit!

Dilwale Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was really good too. It's been ages since I've watched that.

Most of the movies that mekeItellu has posted up are the good ones. Watch Karan Johar directed movies. Socha Na Tha was okay as well.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na but that had some flaws in it.

I like this film too and I would highly recommend checking out "Hum Tum" with Rani Mukerjee. I'm new to Bollywood films too and this movie is my favorite by far. Here are some over-hyped films I would avoid though;

Kuch Naa Kaho- Probably the worst film I've seen in a long time. Filled with over-acting and ridiculous situations.

Salaam Namaste- Tries too hard to break away form Bollywood cliches by having the leads shack up and get pregnant. The issues of abortion and the definition of life are in stark contrast to the overall silly mood of the film. Not to mention it features the most absurd musical sequence ever as the 8 month pregnant lead is dancing and singing!

No Entry- Nonsensical movie about 3 guys in relationships trying to keep their women happy while perusing a sleazy bombshell. The musical numbers are easily forgettable, just like the story.

Bride and Prejudice- Boring, predictable, and downright stupid at times. I'd only recommend it to those who really have an aversion to any sentient thoughts while watching films. And I am an Indian who grew up in America, so this film should probably have appealed to my demographic the most.
