Bright lights, Aliens coming out of the sky, big city, people running, then people fighting back. yes please! seems like a great flick! However, for me this was not as good as skyline. Effects were decent but the characters were not as well developed and it just seemed to be lacking something..
Skyline was made for much less and actually made a profit and will hopefully get a well deserved sequel!
@ Wild dogs lol, thats one way to put it. I find skyline a bit more refreshing because of 1) it starts right away with the invasion 2)the invasion is just there, no building up, no warning, basicly how a real invasion would be IMO 3)I liked the general way it went down, with the lights falling etc (IMO, The darkest hour just ripped this off) 4)It had ships and big azz aliens! All we see in The darkest hour is a few static blimps and some bad-cgi aliens inside them at times.
Another problem with TDH I think is the way the repelling is handled; A thin glassplate can hide a person, well then so can rubber, clothing, plastic and hell, even wallpaper, paper is a great insulator.
If you take a close look at the scene where they are laying under the policecar, the alien can see through the car except for the windows. Uhm? Did they strip the car from all the inside padding and roofing or something? No plastic, no rubber or any sort of material that is just as insulating as glass? Meh.. I think they went over their head with all that.
You should see my review on Skyline... I don't know if Skyline was better than this movie or not but I can safely say that Skyline was probably the worst movie of its year. While it had okay visuals, the plot, characters, and everything made no sense. The atomic bomb scene? WHAT! That blew my mind... literally! That scene really made no sense.
When I first watched Skyline I was actually surprised to be enjoying the first 15 minutes of it but once the aliens came in... entirely bad.
This beats the crap out of SKYLINE (how do you beat the crap out of something that's all crap). It's not perfect, but at least you don't have endless scenes of people debating do we stay in here or go outside. They make their choice (usually bad) and act on it. Still I enjoyed this, SKYLINE I'm still mad about.
im with you on skyline didn't make any sense at all. if they werent able to reproduce and needed our brains for everything how the heck were they smart enough to do anything lol. idk I gues sit could work but it was just bad and not worth it lol.
anyway I felt this movie was at least decent (I gave skyline like 2 or 3 and this was in 5-6/10 range)
I have to agree that it had it's faults, but I still enjoyed it and will definitely watch it again. I also enjoyed Skyline and Battle Los Angeles, which both had their faults too, but still had a lot going for them. I love the whole Alien invasion scenario and can't wait for the next one.
------------------- "I've never seen a sight, that didn't look better lookin' back".
I agree movie was ok I read all the neg reviews before watching it so therefore was expecting crap! Put D.V.D. in to watch as i was kinda nodding off -figured if i fell asleep no loss. However film was able to hold my interest to the end.
RE Goofs (car trunk) To whoever wrote that: The boys jimmied the trunk lock open rendering the mechanism inoperable, so that after the aliens wieght/energy had pressed the trunk lid down and alien had gone past- the lid sprang back!!
I prefer this to Skyline because I like the old school minimalist B movies feel. It reminds me to old John Carpenter's flicks like Assault on Precinct 13 etc. No depth in the characters. They did not even make much attempts to make us care for any of the four main characters either. The jumpy storyline is presented here. The alien monsters were invisible most of the time. That was quite a creative way to reduce budgets. And most of all, the film makers clearly did not want us to take this film seriously. I give this one a 6.
Yep I agree, it really did feel like an old B movie, definitely better than the 4.9 it got rated, its got to be at least a 7. Mind you I didn't expect a lot after reading the review, so I was pleasently surprised.
The fact that this film is being said to be better than Skyline and Battle L.A. pretty much says it all. Both of those films were terrible, and so using them as a comparison only proves that The Darkest Hour can be added to the list of disappointments. Yet again, we got zero characterization which left me not giving a damned about what happened. Yet again we got the boring alien assault out of the blue and a few generic men and women who cluelessly get caught up in the antics. Yet again we got no real closure, only a meandering plot left wide open for an inevitable sequel that nobody wants. The only thing in this movie that made me care was the cat...poor thing, being left behind in that fire.
I predict that next we will be hearing that the upcoming Battleship was better than Skyline, Battle L.A., and The Darkest Hour...meaning that it is more of the same.
- - - - - - - Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
Darkest Hour was much better, a much more interesting environment, much more intriguing aliens and overall better story even though quite cheesy. Skyline was just boring they didn't even really surviving they just stayed in one spot in more than half the movie.
Darkest Hour at-least has a more satisfying ending, better graphics, enviroment, and over-all is a just more entertaining movie, a shame since the darkest hour deserved more money and a sequel would be more interesting than Skyline.
