Why are there Japanese actors?

Isn't it set in Shanghai?

This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

reply

pearl harbor

reply

even if it were set in shanghai, it shouldn't matter if there are japanese actors... i mean, all of memoirs is chinese...

reply

"i mean, all of memoirs is chinese..."

Look how many people bitched and bitched about it though. The Japanese actors in this are playing Japanese characters.

(As a result, it was filmed in London and Thailand.)

They were actually finally given premission a couple weeks shy of wrapping the film. But stayed put of course.

reply

thaivietphan, haha i was gonna say just that. pretty much 80% of the ppl in Memoirs of the Geisha was non-Japanese. Which pisses me off sssooo badly.

But this is Hollywood, what do u expect? that's just how the cookies crumbled. I'm pretty much just gonna watch for Gong Li, so whatever, lol.

reply

No worries luckyrabbit. I'm watching for Gong li too!

reply

:)

That's a good reason (and no, i'm not being sarcastic, I like beauty!). Mmmm, part of why I want to watch this film is Ken Watanabe - he looked gorgeous in Memoirs of a Geisha.

Well, that's a good reason to have a Japanese actor, too, he's hot :P

reply

I have been a fan of Gong Li ever since Miami vice and have looked to see what else she is in or going to be in. I think she is Chinese but, it does not matter. If she is Chinese and playing a Japanese in a movie, what difference does it make? She.s an ACTOR.

reply

She is Chinese and plays a Chinese woman in the film. Totally agree with you about the actor part.

reply

Yes, Hollywood likes to patronize, and most of them are racist. Alex Cox has been quoted in Halliwell's who's who in the movies as saying "If you're a fascist in Hollywood you work with great regularity, if you're not you don't. so i don't"

reply

What utter bollocks.
Alex Cox is a childish conspiracy theorist, who likes to blame his lack of talent on such nonsense.
If you choose to paint 'Hollywood' as majority racist, then you're simply engaging in another form of bigotry.

reply

What do you mean, "this is Hollywood"?
What a silly, generalized cliche - most of Hollywood isn't what you obviously want it to be.
"This" is not Hollywood. Unless all film makers across the entire world are now to be labelled 'Hollywood' just because they make films.
And as far as I'm aware, the cast of characters is international.
Do you also have an objection to Caucasian people playing Caucasian characters?
Should they be Chinese too?
But don't let an inconsequential thing such as reality get in the way of needing to make yourself feel better by the dishonest demonizing of others. If that's really what you need to do for kicks...

reply

i am not labelling film makers across the entire world 'hollywood' just because they make films!, i am in fact very passionate about film and hope to be involved in it one day. you missed my point; what i was saying was the hollywood system, not the majority of film makers, likes to patronize not the independant side of hollywood the major studio side, the one that promises to take the film off the film maker if that person doesn't do as they are told. although some of the independant side will be like that to but i wouldn't say all of them. i have no objection to caucasian people playing caucasian caucasian characters okay. and with my last post i wasn't doing it for kicks okay. goodbye.

reply

The actors in MoG were irrelevant. The problem with it was that is was a terrible movie based on an even worse book that is nothing but a white, male fantasy written by a jackass American who has done effectively zero factual research on the topic and rather gobbled up the BS a single geisha, who took a ton of flak for her stupid actions, fed him.

reply

" i mean, all of memoirs is chinese... "

Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian and Ken Watanabe is Japanese. Just to point that out :) Ziyi Zhang and Gong Li are Chinese.

Huh. Interesting :)

'Sooner or later... you really wear that suit'

reply

Michelle DOES speak "Chinese." She speaks Cantonese, however, not Mandarin. Same for Chow Yun-fat, who also had to study up for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Think cynical thoughts.

reply

[deleted]

I speak people's republic of chinese.

But seriously, there's nothing wrong with a german playing an irishman, etc.... on the other hand I understand some bad stuff happened between china and japan during wwii. Terrible stuff.

reply

First: Michelle Yeoh is Chinese, not a Malay. She was born in Malaysia, true, but if you go to Singapore, the largest ethnic group is actually Chinese, and it's the primary spoken language there. Her first language was English, then Cantonese in Hong Kong.

Back to the OP: Why are there Japanese in Shanghai? Seriously- study some history. Aside from the fact that the Japanese had a settlement there, (a whole neighborhood, as did the English, the Americans, the French, and the Italians) they had also been conquering China piecemeal since 1937. They already held Manchuria, the Rape of Nanking took place in 1937, and they were days away from seizing the city.

reply

Because Hollywood is still a firm believer in 'Whiteman's burden'. For once I would like to see a film where an Asian man comes to America and the White girls are all falling madly in love with him. I guess it would be too hard for H'wood to do and for society to accept.

I watched Ninja Assassin and enjoyed it thank you very much. Women fell all over Rain in that movie (as they should--he's gorgeous and there was plenty of slow-mo workout porn in that film).

Besides, since Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc already make excellent movies for Asian actors, why should major stars in Asia bother to come to Hollywood? They don't need the validation. They're already stars. I just wish more of their films were released in the US (with subtitles).

reply

Dude...obviously nobody studied modern history.

According to the synopsis, the movie is set in the early 1940s just before Pearl Harbour. Japan had invaded and occupied vast swaths of China at the stage - hence the Japanese characters, and Shanghai, still not occupied yet, was a cosmopolitan city which was divided and under control various colonial powers inc. UK, US, France, Germany etc - hence the white people.

Of course after Pearl Harbour the Japanese took over everything until the dropping of the atomic bombs and Shanghai came under the control of Communist China.

Therefore, it is not only feasible that there would be large populations of Japanese and Americans in the city, it is very historicaly accurate. Both powers had a lot of interests in the city.

reply

THANK YOU for saying that. Japan occupied much of China in the early-to-mid 1900s. I can't believe people are complaining about Japanese people in a movie set in Shanghai in the early 1940s. There were many Japanese in Shanghai at the time AND other non-Chinese people (like Russian prostitutes) in the city until China regained control of the territories that had been occupied by Japan.

Seriously, read a history book people.

I love when an OP makes a thread about a certain topic to start controversy, then he/she is proven wrong. Gotta love it.

reply

I know, isn't it great?

reply

Glorious!

reply

Also, I like to add this. Does anybody know Shanghai International Settlement?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_International_Settlement

The settlement had a lot of foreigner settled in the city like the British, the French, the American, and the Japanese so it wouldn't be strange the setting of the film would have these foreigner. People, read a history book and learn about this. So this is not strange to me to see a lot of foreigner in Shanghai.

uh, quick question, Do foreigner (like from Europe or America) go to Shanghai for vacation or business purpose today?

Yeah, Shanghai and other major Chinese cities have lots of tourists and because China is becoming a major world player, lots of companies from around the world do business in China.

I'm an American and traveled to China during college and I met lots of people from around the world in Shanghai and Beijing (for example, I befriended some people from Pakistan while in Beijing).

Maybe check what the film is about and look into the Japanese occupation of China, maybe on WIkipedia or wherever.

There are a couple reasons that there are Japanese actors in this movie. Historically, Shanghai was an ethnically diverse city, and the Japanese were part of the cultural mix. Too, Shanghai was invaded by the Japanese, and you might expect to see some Japanese faces, because they were invading Shanghai. Finally, the producers wanted to include famous stars from many nations, in the hope that it would increase the popularity of the movie. Accordingly, you will see Chinese, Japanese, American, German, and Russians in the mix.

During the filming in Bangkok, I got to meet Gong Li, Chow Yun-fat, Ken Watanabe, and John Cusack. It was a great experience.

reply

Oh wow, I am SO jealous! They are all great actors, American, Chinese, Japanese and whatever else and this looks like it holds amazing promise with such an impressive cast-I sure hope it lives up to the actors in it!

reply

The simple fact is that the Japanese had a presence in China ever since the invasion of Manchuria in 1931. They took Shanghai specifically in 1937 and held it, despite resistance from the combined Nationalist-Communist forces, for the remainder of the war.

The basic question of this thread, however stupid, has been answered!

I am, therefore I think.

reply

Great info in this thread.

One word: ACTING

reply

Yes, it's set in Shanghai. Seeing that the Japanese were occupying Shanghai at the time before Pearl Harbor, it may be appropriate to use Japanese actors to play the Japanese, don't you think?

And to whoever said that it wasn't allowed to be filmed in China, you must be kidding me. I am in Beijing right now and there are posters for it all over town.

I'm so glad littlezeke spoke up. Japan had been all over parts of China. Remember "The Rape of Nanking." Just like in any country there are good and bad people. Not every Japanese participated in such atrocities.

reply

Why are their chinese actors in Memoirs of a Geisha?

Sad to say, most people can't tell the difference... I wish they could... but most don't watch enough asian cinema/TV to tell the difference between Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc etc...

reply

In this case, having Japanese actors is accurate. This movie takes place before World War II, during the Japanese invasion of China. The Japanese actors in the film (Ken Watanabe and Rinko Kikuchi) portray Japanese characters and the Chinese actors (Gong Li and Chow Yun-Fat) portray Chinese characters.

Sorry, I haven't seen the film. I was under the impression that the film took place in the 1930's.
