Who all read the book series?

Just wondering. Because it seems like people who didn't read the books are likely to like this show more than the ones who did.

I read them and loved them. I'm half-Japanese, and it's rare to find an American young adult novel where the lead female character is Asian, so I was very excited to find the series when it originally came out. When I was younger I totally wanted to someday turn the books into a movie or tv series, so I was delighted when I read about it in TV guide a few weeks ago. The show had a fantastic source to use for their script and plot, and yet they totally just took bits and pieces from it and turned it into something unrecognizable. It's one thing to change the minor characters to having a different ethnic, racial, or cultural background, but to change the lead male so extensively is ridiculous. Also, the whole destiny/super skills thing was so stupid. As unlikely as the plot was in the novels, it was pretty realistic. Anyway, overall, as a fan of the books, I was disappointed in the mini-series, but I guess it could have been worse. They could have made Heaven a blonde bombshell.

They could have made Heaven a blonde bombshell.

As sad as it may sound, I would bet you a fortune cookie that that idea crossed the table at least once in one of the ABC "brainstorming" meetings for this show.

They did make Karen a "blonde bombshell". In the books, she was Asian too. I'm reading the books now (currently on book 5) and realizing they changed sooooo many things for the miniseries. But that's why I try to watch movies/shows first, then read the book(s)-it's really not quite as disappointing that way!

I didn't even know this was based on a book series.

I agree with snarkycole, when I read the first book I was completely HOOKED and had to read all the others and I had these ideas of turning the book into a movie or a t.v. show when I got older and when I found out ABC Family was turning it into a mini series I was extremely excited but my excitement turned into extreme disappointment when I saw the trailer and mainly because I had a gut feeling that they were going to change a lot of things for the show.... it really irritated me when they added random stuff to the series that never happened in any of the books... I can understand if you need to change the nationality of a character or change the name of a character or something like that but when you start adding stuff that never happened in the books yeah that is going to irritate me big time!

they always do that, that's why the books are better.

although, do you remember if the ending for the mini series happened the same way in the books?

carrie asai should continue the books!!! because if i remember correctly (it's been years since i've read the books) that it ended with a cliffhanger...
